This may sound silly since most production companies are located north in the LA area. I'm curious though if there are any tv production companies located in the San Diego metro area?

Yes, there are some, and also a number of video companies that specialize in commercial production. Additionally, LA film production companies have filmed at locations here in San Diego County as well.

Stu Segall productions has his studio on Ruffin Rd in Kearney Mesa behind the appropriately named studio dinner, which he owns and is in often. I asked him for my royalties as an extra in an episode of Silk Stalkings and he laughed it off. It was good time in San Diego for crappy syndicated tv shows in the 1990’s. Besides Silk Stalkings there was Renegade, and my personal favorite High Tide, where Rick Springfield and his brother were surfing private investigators. And I’m sure a few others I’m forgetting.

Given your examples, you're forgetting them for a reason

But isn't San Diego best known for its pornography production? Could you look into one of those companies?

Stu isn't doing production work anymore, hasn't been for a few years now. I had a few friends that worked there for years.

Several years ago there was an FX show from the creator of The Shield called "Terriers", filmed and set in San Diego. It ran one season and centered around PI's closing in on a shady plot to turn Ocean Beach into an airport. IIRC, a few episodes had scenes in the Old Townhouse Restaurant on Newport.

ha Silk Stalkings! In 1988 or so, I was playing in a band at a backyard party in Rancho Santa Fe when a crew member came over the fence and asked us to keep it down because they were filming a movie a few houses away. We asked to go see the set and we ended up being cast as a party band in a different episode taped a few months later! I’m still waiting for my check too!

Yep- my SO was an extra for a few episodes in those productions- meeting Lorenzo Lamas and his wife. There were also a few Telenovela episodes filmed here in our neighborhood but that is almost completely stopped.

Odd that most locations would provide a nearly identical “feel” or look as L.A,, yet be far more accessible and easier to procure their location shots but there you have it.
