Hi,

I’m a single adult female in need of immediate room to rent as my daughter, with whom I’ve been living and sharing an apartment, has decided to break our lease and relocate to Tijuana (against my strenuous objections as I am fearful for the well-being of my grandchildren). I’ve been watching her children during the day while she works and have been working at night to supplement our expenses.

I have no idea where to even start looking for a roommate, other fortuitous outcome, or other living situation as I’ve never been in this situation until now.

Any advice you can lend would be SO MUCH APPRECIATED.

Thank you

1 day in TJ is like 2 days in Baltimore, statistically: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...by_murder_rate

So it's not TOO bad, on average. Risk varies by social group also, of course.

Do you have any friends or acquaintances? If so, start with them. Even if they don't have a room they might be interested in leasing out, they may know someone who does. So, tell everyone you know that you are looking. If you belong to a church, ask if they print a newsletter and take personal ads, or if they have a bulletin board where you can post things. While these ideas will take longer, you're likely to end up with a more suitable place if you find something through a referral from someone you know. It's worth a try.

If that doesn't work, in addition to the sites mentioned above, Zillow.com also has roommate wanted listings.

Good luck, and best wishes!

I didn't see any roommate wanted listings on Zillow, which is why I didn't include it.

They won't show as roommate wanted listings like Craigslist but I see ads for room sublets on Zillow quite often so, as I said, in addition to the other sites recommended, it wouldn't hurt to check.

Also, depending on her price range, she might find some small stand alone studios or guest cottages in her price range on Zillow.

It never hurts to cover all bases, especially if she's on a tight budget.

I wonder if moving south of the border with her daughter is an option for her at all?

I've been looking for stand alone cottages myself, and they just started coming up for rent. But it all depends on what her budget is, and she didn't list it.

Moving south of the border can be a real PITA, especially without a SENTRI pass. I moved there, and moved back to San Diego after almost a year, due to the inconvenience. Rents are a lot less, but food and everything else is higher. It cost me $4.50 to do one load of laundry when I lived there. I ended up buying all my food and doing laundry when I came to San Diego. It really wasn't worth it for met to continue living there.

I find this hard to believe. Are you comparing self-serve coin laundry in the U.S. to ones in TJ where someone else does your laundry for you?
