Ok, guess I just didn't get lucky, when I moved back to California from Nevada I had to take the written test.

Why did this three year old post show up in my search????! Well, in 2020 you NOW have to have a California license!! I had to take the written, eye exam, AND road test as my Calif. abstract was so old (how old was it) that it was in the family safe on brown rolled paper. circa 1974. IF you have a valid USA state dr. license, yes, you can turn THAT one in and you may get lucky and just take the written and eye test. (I had to get a Calif. license as our collector cars were on mom's license, and she retired her drivers'..........at 93. Calif. wants even BANK ROBBERS to be legally licensed as they speed away from their crime, as you have to have a valid lic. in order to get valid insurance. makes sense to me.
