San Diego’s sports arena would become Pechanga Arena San Diego under a new $400,000-per-year naming rights deal with Temecula’s Pechanga Resort and Casino.

The deal, which the San Diego City Council is scheduled to approve on Tuesday, would replace an expiring naming rights pact with Valley View Casino in Valley Center that dates back to 2010.
Never knew those deals were so cheap.

I don't gamble, so I've never been to VV, Pechanga, Viejas or whatever else we have (we sure seem to have a lot of them!).

I will say that I can see how VVCC could be confused with the actual casino by those that don't care (my parents, who live nearby, hate sports and don't gamble). So, I guess as kind of a branding nerd, I'm happy to see the word "casino" taken out. I'm not so sure I love attaching the city name to the new title; it seems redundant. But I'll admit, there aren't many corporately-named sports facilities I can really name (or attach to a certain city).

It's too easy to confuse Valley View Casino Center with Viejas Arena.... most commercials regarding events at the sports arena specify "The Valley View Casino on Sports Arena Blvd" or "Viejas Arena at SDSU" to avoid the confusion. Pechanga Arena San Diego might help clear things up, it should be called the Pechanga 'Sports' Arena San Diego.

It's sort of like when people said they lived by Qualcomm...did they mean the stadium or the tech campus?

It should be just renamed Sports Arena, and that would take care of the problem.

That's a good point, too.

Relatedly (or not), with this Soccer City/SDSU West thing lately, has anyone come forward with plans to raze the current Sports Arena and replace it? Not sure how it is on the inside these days, but outside, it is an eyesore.

Wow, I've never seen that site. Some good info, and links to more good info. Guess there's ideas, but it could take quite a while.

There have been rumblings of a new arena being built downtown, but you know how that goes in this town.

With the exception of Petco Park, San Diego's event arenas are dumps. Pathetic really.

Yep, you're right.

I worked at Sports Arena when it was renamed Valley View Casino Center. Money was sunk into it, but it's still a dump.
