Eastlake - a south San Diego surburb with nice houses, above average income, but surrounded by poor ghettos like National City, parts of CV, Otay Mesa and San Yisidro.
Oceanside - a poor north country San Diego county with many poor Hispanics immigrants and low income folks. Yet, it's surrounded by some rich neighborhoods (Vista, Carlsbad, etc). |

Eastlake/CV and Oceanside/Vista are twin brothers separated at birth. Overbuilt McMansioned suburbs with largely non-white population and above average income.

Eastlake is a relatively new master planned development, like Tierresanta, 4S Ranch, etc.
Oceanside is an old military beach town. I have never heard these two compared as "twins" before--interesting. ![]() |

I believe there are some parts of Oceanside that are nice and newer.
Eastlake IS Chula Vista, it's a planned community within the Chula Vista city limits, not a city of its own. It's overrated, IMO. Vista - I've never heard of it being called a "wealthy" area at all. I believe there are homes there that are nice, but the area itself isn't known for its upper income residents. It's not that different from the bad parts of Oceanside and San Marcos. The 78 actually goes through Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista and San Marcos. But as far as Chula Vista and these north San Diego County cities, yes, they are opposites, literally, in that one is way south, and the others are way north. |

Chula Vista consists of two parts ... you get the idea. |

Put that way, yes, I do get the idea--I live in one of the "two parts" (Eastlake). The large amount of land for development at the eastern reaches is another similarity and the reason both have been considered by the Chargers. Both are coastal (C.V. on SD Bay). Pendleton, of course, gives Oceanside a completely different vibe than C.V. though IMHO.

Funny, but as an Eastlake resident I feel Eastlake is often UNDERRATED. With all of the new shopping, restaurants and conveniences, it has really come into its own in the last couple of years but is and has always been a nice place to live IMHO--but then, I haven't lived anywhere else in S.D. |

I agree with this fully. I am one of those people that used to lump the Eastlake community in with my general opinion of Chula Vista, National City, and the South Bay in general. Now that I actually work in this area and have spent loads of time down here (in-laws live here, dad moved here too) I actually see that it is a very well-kept, safe, yet ethnically diverse area and we are in the process of buying a home down here. After seeing what our money can get us in Eastlake vs. the other areas we were looking at, it was no contest. I think that most people who "hate" on the area either a.) haven't spent much time down here or b.) aren't open to living in a heavily hispanic/filipino population area. |

Yep, and it doesn't take even transplants long to develop that attitude about the South Bay, often sight unseen. I have actually invited people to my home from other parts of town who will not come "down there to Chula Vista" because it is "unsafe." Give me a break. As to not being open to a heavily Hispanic/Filipino population area, one race is not "better" than another--at the end of the day, regardless of race, we all pull our pants on the same way! ![]() Last edited by jkoz; 04-17-2008 at 06:23 PM. |
