We moved here a few years later. Never heard about it till we saw it on a 48 Hours TV show (or something similar).

Can any local provide any insight? What the heck caused this? I'm sure the local news was filled with insider gossip.

This.

The shooter was smaller and looked younger, and was new to the area... which made him a target of bullying.

When he went to trial, he had grown up some and the prevailing thought was that jurors would not be sympathetic with him.

However, he did the crime, so...

Too bad the adults working in and around the school at the time could not recognize and address this situation before the tragedy.

Definitely bullying. Very sad case.

The shooter seemed like a nice guy, was from a Navy/Marine family being raised by a single dad after a divorce.

None of that is to excuse him for shooting and kill his classmates, but it is still sad for him, his victims, their families and his family.

^^^^^

Great photo. Must have been quite a story in San Diego back in 2001. I don't remember hearing anything about it while I was living in the Midwest. However, early 2001 is one of those years that many of us just don't remember.

Without going into detail, I am familiar with the incident. There was significant bullying: many instances of outright physical abuse. Robbery. Some of his abusers even poured lighter fluid on him, setting his clothes on fire.

You can abuse people only so far before they go supernova. As an adult, I'm telling you straight up, if someone poured flammable liquid on me and tried to set me on fire, I'm using deadly force in self-defense.

But what is the answer? I have incredible empathy for Andy Williams, far beyond my normal "hang 'em high" attitude, but because he was bullied and the rest doesn't mean he didn't deserve and incredible jail sentence.

One thing I would have liked to have seen was charges brought against the adults he told he was being bullied and did nothing and against the teachers who contributed to the bullying. At the very least they deserved firing.

Calm down? I think many have forgotten how we would react or respond if the same thing were done to us. Maybe this kid took out some dregs of society who would have escalated to worse and worse if not stopped....maybe not....either way, a-hole little pricks that that pour lighter fluid on someone need to be dealt with, shooting or not. If the adults did not want to help out in this case, he did the only thing he knew to do.

To be truthful, if someone could pull out a gun and set the trigger it in someone's face, it'd go a long way to put an end to this type of chit. Law and order has been lost in favor of coddling and feeling sorry for the one who loses their life, though sometimes it just might be justified. We are not a civilized society, but rather, a soft society who apologizes entirely too much for doing the thing that should be done. Maybe not shooting and taking a life, but what? What would have been ok in this situation? An azz kicking? Nope. A punch in the mouth? Nope. We have lost our way on self-defense and handling those that would otherwise try to handle us. heck, you can't even put someone in their place verbally at school or a job without repercussions. It's just stupid, if not sad.

My 7 year-old has started taking Brazilian JJ with me. I can not always be there and she needs to know how to handle herself. I have been accused of teaching her violence. WTF ever....to the contrary....at least she'll be able to put a bad situation to bed, or have a good chance to do so. If she can't diffuse it, she can end it.
