Plus, I'm sure you're needing the extra large truck.

I did my own loading and unloading with a dolly, but didn't have to move appliances. The kiddoes helped as much as they could, but I did the bulk of it.

Lucky you. I remember moving within the city just a year ago and that was such a hassle in and of itself. I told myself next time I'd pay that way I can get someone reliable.

I did few quotes. Based on what I was told, the bulk of the cost is due to the amount of travel (gas and driving time) it takes from one city to another. The total weight has some bearing on it, but to a lesser extent. Also, if the locating you're moving to/from does not allow a Semi/Tractor to pull up during the move, they'll need to have an intermediate size truck (ie Budget Rental) to ferry your goods between the apartment and Semi. There are other factors as well such as flight of stairs they must go up, packaging material, and DIY packing.

Best thing to do is go to BetterBusinessBureau and find local movers, get them to come in for an in-person quote.

I'm getting estimates right now for my move and they're between $1700 and $2500. Since I dont' know anyone in SD, I'm getting a real mover.

I've sold almost everything and am only moving a bed, table, desk, a few armchairs and a couple small cabinets, and about 40 boxes, so there really isn't a lot to move. Because I have so little. PODS and Upack aren't a good deal for me (I couldn't fill a container at this point), and I'm right around the minimum charge for the pro movers so it's actually cheaper getting it done!

I decided I really only needed the basics and could fill out the missing pieces when I got there (gives me more options in rentals if I have less stuff too).

Good luck!

Whoops - I intended to say, but didn't. Sorry! I'm moving from the Minneapolis/St Paul metro. I know, it's not the same region as the original poster, but hopefully some of the info is helpful! I got an update from the low-estimate mover (he came to do an in-house), and I'm looking at just under $2k to move my stuff. it really helps to have as much as possible packed before they show up so there's a more accurate estimate. It's a "to not exceed" estimate, so it could come out lower, but never higher than that amount.

Now I need to just nail down the timeline, budget and a rental in SD! I'm flying out this weekend so hopefully I'll have arrangements made when I get back, becaus I could be leaving as soon as the 25th!

... and yes, the "OMG - what am I doing?!?" insomnia has set in. I was a full hour early to work this morning!

I am moving out there very soon. My moving costs are going to be fairly low for a few reasons. I know a place I can get really cheap gas, so I am going to fill up gas cans, and keep them in my car. Then I am going to look on priceline and such for cheap hotels. I am going to buy what I need when I get out here. I am sending what I can by mail. Dvd's, etc.

I plan on buying a bed out here. I also will be staying at my aunt and uncle's house until my cousin and I can find a place to rent. I am driving in from Pennsylvania.

In my attempt to get simple online quotes, I could tell it pretty much was on the weight of it b/c they almost all wanted inventory sheets filled out so they knew how much stuff I was bringing. I haven't spoken with someone verbally, but I really don't know how much gas contributes to the cost. I'm thinking local movers would be the way to go, but I don't want my stuff damaged and I've heard a few stories. I won't be selling any of my stuff. I'm pretty attached to it.

Here's a money-saving tip, if you're willing to do more work!

Use a UPack trailer and load it at the terminal. Loading at the terminal offers huge savings over loading it at your current home.

Rent a UHaul truck to move your items from your current home to the UPack trailer.

Do the same when unloading the UPack trailer at your new home.

I'm moving from Wash DC to SD this September. My Fiance and I were guessing we would need somewhere around $5000 to move, but I wonder if that number is accurate. we live in a one bedroom apartment, and we aren't moving with that much stuff. Here is what we have to pay for:

1. Uhaul trailer to attach to one vehicle
2. Gas for 2 cars
3. hotel rooms for 3 nights (including fees for our two dogs who are along for the ride)
4. Food
5. Possible deposits for new apartment
6. start up fees for elec/gas/cable

Is this number too low or right on??
