I was diagnosed with GERD in April of last year and was prescribed PPIs which I didn't take after reading about the long term health effects. For the next year I experimented with every natural/safe alternative I could find, none of which worked. I've been taking 20 mg omeprazole daily for the last four months which is the only thing that has significantly helped.

I need to discuss my treatment going forward with a doctor although I'm assuming I'll probably have to take the omeprazole for the rest of my life and face the health consequences later down the road.

This year I switched over to Molina insurance and need to find a new doctor. There are almost 200 doctors within 10 miles of me so I figured asking for recommendations on here might be a good way to narrow it down.

I'm looking for one preferably located in between UTC and Oak Park (92115) and as mentioned above, would need to accept Molina insurance. Thanks in advance!

I can't help you with a doctor referral but I have been down your path.

My symptoms went away after taking omeprazole for about a year. Not sure if your symptoms were the same I had a tickle in my throat constantly that made me cough a lot and heartburn.

I have GERD, have been taking 40mg Omeprazole for years without any problems, and it's prescribed to me by my PCP at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. You can also buy 20mg bottles of it without a prescription in Tijuana. I keep a couple of bottles of it on hand, in case I don't have time to get my prescription refilled and picked up due to my work schedule. And if I don't take it, I start getting heartburn.

Please be careful of what you eat, that is the secret with gerd, and what level you are at with the problem. Didn't your doctor give you a list of what to stay away from? Did you have an endoscopy? If --you don't have a doctor, get a very good one ... a gastroenterologist ... soon.

My doctor also prescribed Omeprazole -- with strict instructions to not eat:

Spaghetti sauce and any tomato product.

Chocolate ! omg

Carbonated drinks.... only a very minimum amount.

Drink only decaf coffee or decaf tea.

Anything spicy (covers a lot of territory, be careful).

Red wine. ut oh.

Chocolate .... again. omg

Anything overly spicey or fizzy.

Otherwise, have fun.

Tijuana? You can buy them at Costco, they were on sale recently for $10/42x 20 mg tablets (regular price is $13).

I've tried the diet change, doesn't seem to make any difference for me.

I was plagued with acid reflux for years. My PCP and I went thru my complete diet. He said "Don't eat any sort of chips. Potato or Corn." I haven't eaten a chip in years. No more acid reflux problems.

I was on Omeprazole for years and just recently weaned myself off it after losing 61 lbs.

Eat Less and wait until your food digests before you put more food into your system.

PPI's can cause weight gain and bone loss degeneration. If you need to use ppi's then try taking them every other day.

Every now and then I still feel little something but after losing weight I have noticed considerable change for the better.
