Hi all!

I'll be starting a job in Boulevard CA end of 2021 and I've started looking for nearby cities I could possibly move to (Currently live in Buffalo,NY so I'm unfamiliar with the area). I don't want to live in Boulevard (seems too rural for me to live day in and day out in). I was thinking Alpine? Any suggestions on how that commute would be? Also if you know any other cities or areas I should be looking that would give me some social life but not an awful drive to work i would appreciate it for sure!!

Thank you!!

The commute from Alpine to Boulevard will be a minimum of 45 minutes pretty much any time of day. Boulevard is rural as is Campo where I'm at and the reason we moved out here. If you can manage an hour commute you may be better off looking at areas in El Cajon, Lakeside, Santee or La Mesa.
Wishing you luck, Ron

What will you be doing all the way out there? Not sure where to live out that way, sorry.

I think it’ll be a bit shorter than that? I was making small talk at a dog park in La Mesa (by Grossmont HS) and this nice old man drove out to it from Boulevard three times a week. Apparently he used to live in El Cajon and did it for his dog as that’s the only park it knew? Long story short, he said it would take about 50 minutes from his house to the park.

I really like Alpine. While it has everything you need, I’d want to be closer to civilization if I was just moving here from Buffalo (or anywhere). Not much there for having a social life, but it’s nice if you want a slower pace while still being relatively close to San Diego. I’d sacrifice the extra 15 minutes in my commute to be closer to the city. I feel I would be more motivated to get out to do things, especially after work M-F, than I would having to drive in from Alpine? I’d look in and around La Mesa as there’s plenty of places to have a active social life with, it won’t add too much to your commute, and you’ll be centrally located within the city for getting out and exploring.

If you’re a Bills fan go to the Local in Pacific Beach on Sunday for the games. It’ll be packed with people from all over that region. They have beef on weck and Sahlen hot dogs on the menu, with cold Labatt Blue to wash them down. You’ll feel right at home. Good luck to you, and welcome to San Diego when you get here.

I'm very familiar with Boulevard. I started my career working out in East County of San Diego. I think Alpine is going to be your best choice. They have supermarkets, restaurants, schools...Casino..etc. On your off time you can drive to San Diego for social life, beach, bars....

You being the new guy though...they may stick you on midnight shift.

Alpine is your best bet. El Cajon has more to offer, but it's an easy drive from Alpine and there's something to be said about a shorter commute to/from work. La Mesa (and further west) is where you'll likely find yourself spending time with social activities, as opposed to El Cajon, so you might as well settle in Alpine and enjoy the shorter commute.

Alpine has a problem with it being right where the topography of downtown's air goes to "sit." It's at just the right altitude to catch the regions "smog layer."
Currently there:
91F
AQI...64

Boulevard? Had no idea there was any jobs in Boulevard. (Unless you're Border Patrol.)
And even then....

I'd consider Pine Valley in addition to Alpine. It may be too small for the OP's needs, but it is a pleasant little community, and the commute would be somewhat shorter.
