Default Help me! Wanting to move to CA

Any, any help or advice would be appreciated. I'm going to be moving from Michigan and I have no idea where to start....

Where is a good place/neighborhood to live in Southern California. I'm not looking for the fanciest little town (please no small towns), but somewhere that is relatively safe, but cheap. Which leads me to...

Like housing. I know that I'm spoiled by cheap rent here. What is the average for rentals and what would you consider a good deal for one? Utilities? If I had to have money to last me 3 months w/o a job how much would you bring?

What do you like about it? What would you change? I would really like your opinion...
