The stats are just cumulative figures on the metro area and doesn't take into account areas of gang activity. A lot of Bloods n' Crips and Latino gangs ( Sureno Trece, Chidos Picudos, Vente Seis, La Tremendas, etc) make their way from LA down to North County SD. Areas of Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, San Marcos and Encinitas are notorious for gang activity.
No, those are stats for each individual city. Yes SD County has gangs but just b/c we have them doesn't mean it's more dangerous here than Seattle. And do you actually have anything to back up your claims b/c I have yet to see it, please take a look at the stats before you make such erroneous claims.
City-Data.com crime index for 2006
San Diego 347
Oceanside 301
San Marcos 241
Vista 313
Encinitas 187
Carlsbad 225
Seattle 559
Los Angeles 384
Even LA, despite their notorious gang problems, has a lower crime rate than Seattle. Perception is often different than reality.
I wouldn't say Carlsbad, San Marcos, Encinitas are "notorious" for gang activity.
To sum it up as a native PNW who now live in SD:
Seattle, better city vibe. San Diego, more friendly occupants.
Seattle, rainy, San Diego sunny.
Seattle- majestic outdoors, San Diego- Ocean/weather
Seattle- nerds and uglier people, San Diego- flip flops.
They are VERY VERY different places. I find Denver to be more similar to SD in terms of being very outdoor oriented and mellow. Seattle is more similar to San Francisco in terms of being more city oriented.
North County isn't as conservative as advertised. I'd say it is more apolitical.
OCEANSIDE ---- While police say gang violence has been on a downturn in the city over the past year, the recent slaying of an Oceanside police officer by an alleged gang member has focused the community's attention back on gangs.
Oceanside has the dubious distinction of having the largest number of gangs and gang members in North County, according to law enforcement officials and data gathered by a local gang task force.
There were roughly 39,740 gang members and associates throughout North County in 2007, according to San Diego Regional Gang Task Force figures. A little more than half of those, about 21,153 gang members and associates, lived in Oceanside, Vista and San Marcos, the data showed.
The task force could not provide more current North County numbers, but Oceanside police gang unit Sgt. Ruben Sandoval said his department's 2008 figures are more accurate and show a drop in gang activity.
Sandoval said Oceanside now has 112 street gangs, made up of roughly 1621 documented gang members. Another 1450 people are associates, meaning they are linked to those gangs, he added.
The Regional Gang Task Force figures showed that in 2007, Escondido was second behind Oceanside in the number of street gangs, with four.
Yes we all already know there are gangs, I already stated that. But that doesn't change the fact that there is more crime in Seattle than any of the cities in San Diego County you mentioned. You don't have any stats showing any city in the county having more crime overall than Seattle. Did you just read about gangs, get all scared, then assume that San Diego is somehow more dangerous than Seattle despite statistics showing it's not?
Every metro area has pockets of crime and all the crime stats include all the gang areas and what not, if it didn't then they would be even lower. You still haven't shown how SD has more crime than Seattle, all you did it show it has gangs, which we all know already.
Seattle- nerds and uglier people, San Diego- flip flops.
That's why I'd fit in better in Seattle. In San Diego, I would get beat up by all the jocks, lol. The San Diego crowd really is like jocks and cheerleaders. It's the perfect place to be if you want to feel like you're still in high school. Even people in their 30's and 40's still have that mentality. The women are hot though, however it can be challenging to pick up the blonde cheerleader type in the Gaslamp if you're not the football player/preppy type.
There might be a lot of nerds in Seattle, but they like to think of themselves as intellectual. The "nerds" can feel more comfortable there and associate with others like them. It's known to have to highest percentage of people with Bachelor's degrees. Also, Microsoft is there so that could explain another reason. Just look at Bill Gates, lol.

It's not like Seattle has THAT much more crime than San Diego, not like comparing S.D. to Detroit or anything. It's funny how San Diegans mentioned cities like Seattle, Minneapolis, or Denver as dangerous since every city in the U.S. is dangerous compared to San Diego.

With the exception of Lakewood, Tacoma, and Burien, Seattle is very safe. Cannot be compared to Southern California where police chases and Rodney King riots which we are famous for. Stats and numbers are no substitute for actually living there.
Our relatives live in Seattle and say that San Diego downtown feels safer than Seattle downtown. San Diego has a small beach town feel to it still. Statistics are still the facts. There are more crimes committed in Seattle and more dangerous crimes committed there as well. I've always compared the two cities because my dh is from there.

No, that is what LOS ANGELES is famous for. And the ironic thing is LA still has a lower crime rate than Seattle, which really surprises me!! Where were there Rodney King riots in San Diego? So can I take the crime rate of Tacoma and apply it to Seattle since that is what you seem to be doing with LA, even though Tacoma and Seattle are actually in the same metro area unlike LA and SD.
Perception is no substitute for REALITY either! You have absolutely NOTHING to back up any of the BS you claim besides your fear mongering personal perception. You have yet to provide any actual evidence of how Seattle is safer than SD but keep claiming it is. Maybe latinos or something just scare you here, get over it already.
Actually, the reason why Seattle has a higher crime index than San Diego and L.A. is because Seattle's population is lower (only half a million in the city center). San Diego has 1.2 million, so it can have double the number of crimes as Seattle and still have the same crime rate. L.A. has 4 million, NYC has 8 million, so it can have that many times the number of crimes to match.
Even people in their 30's and 40's still have that mentality. The women are hot though, however it can be challenging to pick up the blonde cheerleader type in the Gaslamp if you're not the football player/preppy type.
I'm one of those tall blondes in flip flops, and all I can say is, have you seen "Revenge of the Nerds"?
