Is Point Loma nice?
Ive basically got it narrowed down to Point loma, PB, or downtown for an aprtment. Looking for something decent in the 15-1750 range. Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

Point Loma is nice, but it includes large swaths of apartment complexes which may not be so nice. In that price range, you should be OK.

Point Loma is a crap shoot. Certain areas are really nice and certain areas are really bad. The traffic in this area is insane. I would say it is the most congested neighborhood in San Diego. The range you are working with will be okay to get you a decent place in any of these neighborhoods.
If you are strongly considering PL, I urge you to visit before signing a lease.

Point Loma ain't that bad. It's one of the other places I would not mind living in the county.Only drawbacks would be traffic in and out of the area(bad on weekends too) and the airplane noise.Neither would bother me,I grew up around noise so I got used to it at a young age.
Pacific BeachGreat, some complain about the drinking scene but hey, don't like it;don't go there.Plain and simple.
DowntownEahhh.Too many homeless people and it's not a total fit for resident living yet.Give it about 3 or 4 years and it will be more resident friendly.
The good that all 3 have in common? You can "cluster" your living. You will not have to drive for 20 mins on local streets looking for what you need, all 3 areas have streets that have everything, split from residential areas.
The bad that all 3 have in common?Traffic/noise.If airplanes, sirens, drunk people, trains, things of that nature don't bother you then it won't be a problem. The traffic in PB is tough because there isn't really arterial streets with 4 total lanes, most have 2.And Downtown, well it's Downtown.

I live in Point Loma, bought there 2 years ago. My advice would be to try and stay at least 2 blocks AWAY from Rosecrans. The neighborhoods improve dramatically once you pass this barrier.
There are several newer apartment developments and foreclosed new construction condos that might be available to rent.
The airplane noise is dependant on location, if you are under the flight path it is a huge concern. Also, regardless of flight path, you'll get huge military aircraft takeoff every so often that shakes the entire neighborhood. Also, helicopters often hover the entire day and can still be out there at 10-11PM, so if you are sensitive to noise, Point Loma is not for you.
The benefits are central location to the best parts of San Diego. Everywhere you would want to be you can get to in 10-15 minutes.
Another benefit are the views of the bay and of downtown. Some of the best views in San Diego.

I live on the East Coast but I have family in San Diego and visit the city quite often. I like Point Loma for its scenery, but I would not choose to live there. While there are nice areas of the neighborhood, I agree with a previous poster's comments that the traffic (especially along Rosecrans) is terrible. There is no convenient or uncongested way into or out of Point Loma.
PB is a lively area and caters to a younger crowd; some people love it and some people hate it. PB suffers from traffic congestion, but it's less geographically isolated than Point Loma.
Downtown has numerous possibilities. I'm not sure what $1750 can get you in the current market.
Good Luck

When I first moved to SD, I looked in the same geographic locations as you are looking now. I ended up settling at Mission Beach near Belmont Park. I love that I am 50 yards from the ocean and bay and I have quick access to I8. However, I regret the amount of noise in the area and drunks walking around at 3:00 am.
I considered PB as well; however, as some have already mentioned--getting out of PB is not fun. North PB is much more residential and fewer knuckleheads. Same goes for La Jolla. Just keep in mind you will spend more money to rent a place in these areas.
I also like Crown Pointe. This is a bayside community within PB, very nice as well and has a direct route to the I8 and I5.
If I had to do it all over again, I would have moved downtown. I love it there. Everything is within walking distance and all of SD's major freeways run through there. Ya, there are homeless people, but I'm bothered more by knucklehead drunks who walk around the beach.
Good Luck, whatever you decide.

Thanks a lot guys It's tough to be 50 states away and decide a good area. I hear about people picking up and leaving quickly and I feel a lot of that has to do with where they decide to reside I don't want to make that mistake Moving to a cheaper quieter palce seems fine to me, other than the fact that I might get anxious or bored if i have to drive to get the beach or downtown. I ahvent been to MB or OB, are these places I should look into?

MB: Very, very crowded and loud. Lots of vacation rentals in the area. I love surfing and am pretty social so it doesn't bother me too much. I enjoy hearing the waves and having the ocean so close. That's the biggest benefit of MB.
OB: Very cool, laid back, and hippieish. Some people crack on OB and call it shady. I don't think so. It's just a matter of taste. A little less crowded than MB, but that aint saying much.
You owe it to yourself to come out one weekend and see it all yourself.
