Lots of homes with bars on their windows. Not a good sign to me.

I resent that comment from JohnAlt... I live in Spring Valley, NY and I do not bar my windows. My family has occupied Spring Valley and Chesnut Ridge area since SV and CR were actually known as only Spring Valley. To date myself, I lived in SV since 1982. I like living in Spring Valley, because its culturally eclectic. My only downfall is that I have to leave Spring Valley for a downtown/artsy area like Ridgewood NJ or Tarrytown. Besides that, everything is in reasonable distance - access to NYC transit, Post Office, Dry Cleaning, Fast Food...

...I don't think you saw that you're in the San Diego section. This is for Spring Valley, CA.

Spring Valley has been discussed several times in the forums... you should search back to review some earlier posts.

Overall it's varied with ranges from from poverty to lower-middle class to middle class with some upscale residences up in the hills. There are some crime and gang issues that give it a negative reputation but there are very nice parts that while they may be technically Spring Valley are not usually associated with it (the north end, Casa De Oro and Mount Helix southern foothills, Dictionary Hill).

Generally Speaking the "flats", La Presa and the areas immediately around 125 are considered bad areas, however even La Presa is not all that bad over towards the resevoir. Personally I would avoid most of Spring Valley in favor of La Mesa, even the worst areas of La Mesa are probably better and certainly more central.

I had a friend who lived there and she was always scared. She had someone break into her house and steal her purse in the middle of the day. I just got a creepy feeling everytime I was there. You couldn't pay me to live there.

I'm with you. Spring Valley is awful. It was bad when we left SD in 2001, so I can't imagine it got any better
