Well, depending on your budget and whereabout you want to be in SD, La Jolla, Scripps Ranch, Poway...these are all good places to be...quieter than the city, like downtown or PB, but still accessible. Likely will cost you at least $500K to buy a house...I think North County has an overall nicer, family feel, versus more south like Hillcrest, PB, etc. Tierrasanta, which is VERY central is a nice family place also.

Coastal those are great - throw Carmel Valley in there as well.
Inland try Carmel Mountain/4S Ranch/Rancho Bernardo/Poway.
Great schools (Poway school system), and very family friendly.
I also like Scripps Ranch to the South. San Diego school system (not so good), but the schools in Scripps itself are excellent.

Socketz has some great suggestions, it really depends on where you will be commuting to.

All Of San Diego
ALL OF SAN DIEGO is nice. And being nice is proportional to the price. Although housing prices went down, still san diego housing prices are still up there. And the cost of living is high too. Least nice on my opinion is 92102 going to encanto area. On the average location like chula vista, Just A bed space will run you $500 at least. In san diego Gas is $4.20. sales tax 7.75 to 8.25. Weather and climate is great. Eastlake area is nice just as long as you don't mind a 20 min drive just to get out of there to the freeway. Also if the rental price is too good to be true make sure that the house you are going to rent is not in the process of foreclosure or short sale - the landlord may run with your deposit and leaving you being evicted by the bank. I have lived in san diego for 10 years. I love it but its getting too expensive for me. Good luck to you.

I like the Clairemont area near the intersection of Balboa and Genesee. It is cheaper than other areas and family friendly. I lived in the area for a while and miss it. There is also the Bay park area which is more expensive but really nice. I think one of the best suburbs of San Diego is La Mesa. It is a nice area, lower price, safe, family friendly.
I hear the best schools are in the Rancho Bernardo area, but it is more expensive. As is Scripps Ranch. But Mira Mesa is cheaper and it borders these areas.
