4paws4Riverside is on a distinguished road
I would like to put an "ALERT" out for residents in Riverside, CA. My mother-in-law informed me today that coyotes were spotted last night behind her house. I have a small Yorkie/Maltese mix and it frightens me to let my dog go out at night. Any advise for owners of dogs and cats, to protect them against these predators?

Be careful of your pets if there are coyotes around. They will scale a fence up to 6 ft.

First of all, do not allow your pet out alone in your yard unless it is secure. The fence must be 6 ft or higher for a coyote not to jump the fence. If in doubt, check with the animal control people and they will be able to direct you.

Most of the time, coyotes travel at night in packs. When they are in packs they will take down any size dog. The howling noise you hear is when they killed their pry.

Coyotes do travel in the daytime. Usually early morning. They are smart. If you have a small animal they usually will lurk nearby for days/weeks, scope out the surroundings. If they are in a pack, they will send one coyote out to attract a dog, and that dog will follow the coyote to the nearby pack, and they kill the dog. Coyotes are not afraid of roaming in neighborhoods. They shy away from people.

We have them all over here in Lemon Grove. My house is right next to a mini-canyon, more a big ditch really (lol), that they use as a home seasonally. Many stories of cats gone missing and even people going out into their back yard and seeing the site of the kill with fur and blood all over like something exploded.

My fence is low and apparently they use my yard regularly (just moved in about a year ago). I've never actually seen one but the signs are everywhere. Droppings in my backyard are pretty common and I'm pretty sure they are coyote as they are around the size of my labs and they aren't his. Happens enough that I'm guessing they use the yard to stalk the cats that my neighbor feeds. Also, sometimes I hear them scrambling around at night or the all too common sound of the howls when they make a kill.

Arrow Coyote at Euclid Torlley Station

I have seen one at the Euclid Trolley Station. Next to the station is a desiccated stream. They are almost invisible because of their camouflage that fits perfectly to the riverbed.

I can't personally verify this but I have been told coyotes have been seen in the ravine at Missions of Rio Vista apartment complex off Friars Rd in Mission Valley.

Yes, there are lots of coyotoes in Misson Valley. They live along the river beds and canyons. There is a condo complex right off Ulric Street, I think it's called City Limits, or something like that. I used to work security there on the weekends, and the residents said that the coyotes would come right up to their first floor windows. I wonder if the residents of the new Avalon apartment complex across from Fashion Valley mall see coyotes...

There are coyotes living along the south side slopes of Mission Valley also. They recently killed a cat in my neighborhood which is on the mesa south of I-8.

Coyote/Bobcat warning signs are posted in residental areas of the Bonita area. Have seen several coyotes and something that looked like some type of bobcat on Briarwood near the 54 Fwy. Some believe these and/or their offspring were displaced from the mountain areas in the 2007 fires and have made their way toward the city, so we'll probably being seeing a lot more of this.
