Our relatives in the NW are surprised when they come down in the winter and we are always running here and there on the weekends. I lived on Kauai, the far west side - talk about isolation. I nearly cried when we first moved there but then it grew on me.

Daytime in SD is definitely fun, but I think the night culture is seriously lacking in SD. And don't bring up Gaslamp. It's terrible. I think the sprawl makes SD feel boring. Too much land that is brown.

breeze823,
i wasn't bored when i was in LA, Boston or NYC. those places are never boring to me. if you are a boring person living in a boring place, then you can't tell it's boring. i find SD to be boring because i am not a boring person.

If those places weren't boring to you then great, I'm happy you enjoyed them. Just because you find San Diego boring though doesn't mean it is, it's anyone's opinion I suppose.
My opinion is there is always something to do in San Diego, and the weather usually cooperates if what you want to do is outdoors.

I don't think SD is a boring city, but San Diego can be boring in that there are not as many city-focused things to do as opposed to outdoor activities. There are not a lot of cute walkable areas where you can tool around from shop to shop, cafe to cafe, stop in a park. Most of the walkable areas are high-traffic, very crowded places and are only a block or two long. In Boston or NYC you can kill a day just walking around the city and different neighborhoods. Portland and Seattle have lots of cafes and interconnected parks that you can go to without having to necessarily drive.
I hope in time San Diego will get a pedestrian mall-type area which would be a boon for people who like to walk, browse, and graze on food without having to pack up the car. San Diego is a little too spread out to do that right now.

You're dead on. There is too much driving in SD and the walkable areas are too small like Hillcrest and Little Italy. Driving to one place and to another ruin the fun momentum.
I want SD to bring in more culture and more people so it will have to develop more to meet the increased population. I hear alot of Northeasterners coming to SD and I am very happy. It will bring more diversity of different people. Because of great industry market here and the comfortable climate, it has alot of potential to become a great city.
