Seasons & Holidays
Well, it's official! My husband and I will finally be moving out to SD in Sept. Since we will be there on the cusp of the holiday season, I was wondering if some of you native SoCal residents could inform me on what to expect as far as how Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Eve is celebrated. I would love to know about some of the best family-friendly events and attractions. Also, where are some great places to visit in the Fall? It's always been my favorite season and since there are mountains nearby I am wondering if there may be some foliage a days drive away or any great cider mills you can recommend? Thanks!

Foliage and Cider are an east coast thing. Here it's scrub sage and some very hardy but craggy pine trees. Head up to the Pine Hills Lodge at Christmas time for a bit of western mountain holiday spirit. san diego hotels julian cabins mountain inns motels |

Isn't Julian known for their apple orchards? I would think there would be a cider mill somewhere in that region, but maybe I'm mistaken. Thanks for the Pine Hills Lodge rec!

Yes you can get cider in Julian.
Just remember... a day's drive from San Diego and you are in the desert! |

Oh I guess I meant anywhere that you can drive and be back home in a day. Seems there are many landscapes in the state depending on which direction you travel and how far. Well, only water if you go West.  |

Holidays are the one thing about San Diego that got me down. It just didn't feel like Christmas, Halloween, etc. Also, American holdays are just not a big deal either (the 4th of July, Memorial day, etc.). I guess if I had grown up there, I wouldn't have noticed it so much.

Yeah, I have to admit, the holidays are probably what I will miss most about Michigan. We're very festive! I suppose I will find other substitutes though. One person told me to visit Mt. Palomar during Christmas for the snow. Actually, it's not the snow I will miss so much as the Fall. I'm moving to get away from the snow, but once in a while is nice and then I can go home. 
Kind of surprised that 4th Of July and Memorial Day are not more of a big deal with all the military! |

Go to the December Nights celebration in early Dec. in Balboa Park. It's one of the coolest festivals anywhere. Choirs, music, food, all the museums are open for free 'till 9:00 P.M. Also, many churches and youth groups have very fun Halloween celebrations for kids. Plus the "trick or treating" in most all neighborhoods. Enjoy  Also, the 4th is HUGE out here- - multiple fireworks in the sky- - actually SD is ranked as one of top ten places to celebrate the 4th. |

Yep, have to go to Julien! It's just not the start of fall without a trip to Julien
As far as how holidays are celebrated, probably the same as where you are from with the exception of not having to wear a snow suit for Halloween
I spent my last Christmas in San Diego, in 2000. Having lived there all my life, and having yet another Christmas in shorts, I wanted some cold weather,lol...
