moved to the ghetto today- anywhere worth going nearby?
I took advantage of a $300/month room in a decent house in Sherman Heights (20th and K street). I've heard the area was once pretty bad but has gotten a lot better. I don't plan on roaming the streets at night and I'm used to living near streets you don't even drive on in the middle of the day, so not too worried. My question is this: what is there nearby that I should take advantage of? I've only been in SD 3 months but haven't really exposed myself to downtown much. With the money I'm saving with cheap rent and finally being close to work, I may actually be able to have a life for the first time since I've been here. My roomates are a little younger than I am, so I can rely on them to introduce me to the local club scene if I ever feel the urge, but at 32 I'm more interested in cool little irish pubs and sports bars, maybe the occasional martini bar. A good happy hour spot is always nice. Any non-hangout suggestions would be helpful too (restaraunts, shops, sites, etc). I just want to take advantage of my new neighborhood without making too many rookie mistakes.
I did try Adalbertos today and was very impressed. Santanas is no longer my favorite drive thru taco shop.

Sherman Heights isn't the ghetto anymore.
There are all sorts of amenities in Golden Hill ... Luigis, Turf Club, Krakatoa.

That's good to know. I've heard it's gotten better, but wasn't sure how much. Thanks for the recommendations. |

Interesting you say that. I just noticed yesterday that the crime rates for Sherman Heights are now below the city average, especially property crime.

Where is Sherman Heights? Is it part of Golden Hills? If you take G street from downtown and get onto the 94 is it the neighborhood you see immediately to the left side of the 94? Where all those old Victorian looking houses are facing the freeway?
