Default Are there any breed restrictions moving to San Diego? Specifically Pitbulls

My girlfriend and I are moving down to San Diego soon and will be renting. Are there any breed specific laws? We have a very well behaved Pitbull and we want to make sure that apartments won't discriminate against her because of her breed. Does anyone have any leads on places that rent with pitbulls? We are trying to stay as close to the heart of the city with a minimal commute. We are looking to rent a 1br for under 1K a month or a 2br for under 1300$.

We would like to stay away from the shady area's also.

Please let me know if anyone has any info. Thanks~

City of San Diego allows them. in La Mesa they are banned. You'll have to check the individual city you are moving to.

I'm sure your dog is well behaved, but those things are the scourge of my neighborhood!

My brother has a huge pit/bullmastiff and a lot of his friends have pits too. I did have a friend in La mesa with a pit but they live on the border close to El Cajon in a house. I know El Cajon (so so area depending on where you are, outer areas are better) Rancho San Diego (nice area) Santee (so so to nice) Lakeside (country type) have not questioned them on their dogs. These places are a little further out but that's the only areas I know people with pits. Then again, the managers might have been way cool about the breed of the dog and didn’t question it. Pet deposits can be extreme and most places have a size/lb limit on dogs. The best thing I would do is call around the places you like and ask. Good luck and your pooch is so cute.

As they should be! Just think of the many children they have mauled and maimed!

What a cute bulley! We have 2 dogs and 1 cat and we live in the city of san diego.
No problems just a few freaked out people now and then when we take the dogs out for walks or to dog beach.
we use sensation harnesses and 3 foot leads.

My Bulley was actually attacked by a rat terrier in our driveway.
The dog ran up and my dog was leashed to me
The terrier grabbed my pit bull by the tail with it's mouth and would not let go!
End result was me attacking the other dog's owner for being irresponsible.

Well generally pitbulls that maul little children were raised in such a manner to be more aggressive....blame the individuals who did those dogs wrong not the breed itself...dogs should not be blamed for the cruel treatment the recieve from people! I get so angry with people who don't understand so they blame the thing that has the least choice about why they are the way they are.

I've seen news reports in San Diego where a pitbull had to be shot. I don't have a problem with them unless they're walking around the street or owners walk them without a leesh.

I've actually had a couple big dogs chase me (not pitbulls) as a kid while a young child maybe 8 or 9 years old was walking the dog and he couldn't hold onto the leesh and the other times the dog got out of the yard and was walking around. It's no fun when you have to literally jump over your own fence to get away.

Well I for one have got to say WOW to all the ignorance out there I have owned Pit Bulls for the majority of my life and at the age of 33 I am currently the proud owner of three well behaved ( Red Nose Pit bulls ) as far as I know in San Diego I have not heard of any breed restrictions only restrictions I have heard of is owning more than five adult dogs in one household although in apartments and townhomes etc. may or may not have there own restrictions.. Good luck on your move and with your pet bully and to all who read this dont band the bad people who own the breed educate the ignorant so that one day they may lead ..

I agree with thug-passion... it is appalling how closed minded and ignorant people can be. My husband and I own 2 american pit bull terriers and they are the best dogs I have ever had! They are sweet hearts! They love everyone. They are both so smart, sweet, loving, loyal, tollerant, and well behaved. Untill people open their eyes and see that its not the breed thats bad, nothing will change. If you arent a responsible owner you shouldnt have any breed of dog. If you are a responsible owner it shouldnt matter what breed of dog you own.. because if you are a responsible owner your dog wont be running the streets where something bad could happen. No matter what breed you own it needs to never be outside of your house unless its in a fence or on a leash.... Like I already said, our dogs, brooklyn and destiny, are so sweet and so well behaved BUT out of respect for our dogs and the people that come into our home we keep them in their crates when someone comes over.. unless its someone that the dogs know and love and even then we would never leave them alone together, not even for a second. Its all about how you raise and train you dog to be and if you are a responsible, respectful owner or not... enacting a breed ban will do nothing but cause a false sense of security! It wont fix anything..
