Default SD Sports Arena

What's the deal with this - it is one of the ugliest arenas that I've been to in this country. Any interesting history (looked at wikipedia)? Should it be imploded and is there $ to be made for somethang new?

It's pretty old and run down but don't expect a new one anytime soon. We won't even build a new Chargers stadium let alone a new arena that doesn't have an NBA or NFL team and SD in the past has proven it can't really support an NBA team, twice (Rockets and Clippers)

It's definitely not a suitable concert venue, either. Saw Santana there once (who I love) and the acoustics were so horrible we nearly left the concert early.

Right after it was built I saw Jethro Tull with Led Zeppelin there. Jethro Tull was great because they kept the volume down. It was great, then Led Zeppelin began and they were unbearable with the loudness and all the echos. Within 2 minutes of the start of Led zeppelin over half the audience got up and walked out.

It's a dump. Fortunately, we have the Cox Arena at SDSU as an alternative arena site.

Unless we get an NBA or NHL team, were stuck with the SD Sports Arena, I'm afraid.

I've heard people say that it was state-of-the-art for its time. Even if that was the case, "its time" has certainly passed.

It's been around since 1966. Now, I wasn't alive then, but my dad was here to see it completed (when he was in boot camp at the former NTC), and yes, it was great back in the day, but these days? Not so much. The property gets most of its income from the Kobey's Swap Meet held in it's parking lot, and of course, the occasional wrestling match and concerts, but that's about it. The clippers and gulls played here long ago, but that time has obviously passed.

It's in definite need of rehabilitation (or even demolition for that matter), but if it were to be torn down, the city doesn't have enough money to build a new arena, and it's probably very likely the site would be replaced by MORE condos. Like we really need more of that here.

Agreed... I think point loma would benefit from an entire revamp of the whole sports area/midway district.
