Julian is a nice town in the mountains, definitely away from the city. It's a historic mining town with very small but quaint downtown. Closest hospitals are in S.D. though, and it's not a good option if you plan to commute into San Diego daily (2 lane mountain road for 25 miles). Lots of great views and low crime. Alpine (east of Lakeside) has a small town feel but is getting a little more suburban with some tract homes, etc. now. Also, there's Harbison Canyon and Crest (often hit by fires) but pretty.
