NYC is a neat place to visit but I honestly cannot figure out how people make it a home. They talk about the city's energy and fast pace but I see it as little more than an endurance test, not to mention you are royally screwed on the pricing of everything. NYC certainly isn't for everyone.

I can understand wanting a faster pace in life though. Where I live now is too laid back, it is too difficult to get anything done. As much as I like smaller towns, I am realizing I will need to live in a city again. If all of my ducks line up, hopefully it will be San Diego in a few years.

Just wondering...for those who are moving to SD or have lived there...what safe neighborhoods would you recommend for someone who's single/female? Rent range is anywhere from 700 - 1400... what websites can I go to start my search? thanks!

NYC has its strong points, but San Diego truly has many great qualities. The weather certainly is one of them, but so is the ability to go and do things without having to spend $20 just for a beverage and the right to sit down and use the restroom.
So true!

There have been lots of threads started on this topic, and there are lots of neighborhoods that fit your price range, well not so much in the 700-900 part of it.

Tell us more about what is important to you in a neighborhood. Some people want new and modern and sterile, while others want old and charming, while others want old and funky. We can't help too much until we get a list of your particulars... the more the better.

Def. want a modern apt... nothing vintage... safety is important..and public transportation closeby can't hurt either. Basically, want to stay in a neighborhood that's somewhere centrally located..and since I'm from Chicago, any area with a city vibe would be ideal!

Whoa....whoa, I just got my thread hijacked!! No offense, but I thought you had all these questions answered when you started your own thread on this subject.

As some just stated, NYC has the "on the go" pace. I have a company car (w/ p-ing spot in lower manhattan....jackpot!!) and do enjoy driving around the bumper car track when not stuck in a grid lock. BUT, if you want to enjoy the lifestyle by living in the nice sections, you have to make mucho bucks. I thought my fiance and I made a pretty good dollar. Wrong! We are already browsing the websites to one day buy a small place in North PB. Hopefully the housing market will be more favorable for buying in 2 years. I hear it is still dropping.

I grew up in the NYC suburbs.

Most regular upper-middle class people with jobs do not live in NYC or even outer boros. They commute from Westchester, Northern NJ, or Long Island. Nowadays they even come in from Rockland county and southern Penn. Only young people, the poor, and the ultra-wealthy (many are foreigners) live in NYC. There is also a large contingent of aging baronesses and other such "old money" types and their families still in Manhattan especially.

NYC is a place where you have 65-year old concert pianists living in rent-controlled 500sf 1BR apartments for their entire lives, it's not a typical lifestyle even for that area. You can have a nice quality of life in NYC metro but you need to figure out the commuter lifestyle first.

In my opinion if you are making a high salary, i.e. 150k+ you can have a better quality of life in NYC suburbs than you can in San Diego. LI, Westchester and NJ, have better schools, more access to cultural amenities, people are more focused, driven, and educated and have traditional family structures than in CA. You also do not have to pay 700k and be 8 feet from your neighbor either (but you will pay insane property taxes). You can pay 500k and have access to among the best school districts in the country. NYC suburbs are much more solidly middle class than SoCal, and the middle class in NY metro is more stable and successful than the middle class in SoCal. San Diego has a very easy and fun lifestyle but you do trade opportunity for it.

I live in Baltimore and it's been compared to little NY, but with more crime and I've been contemplated moving to San Diego for a long while now. The few days that we have 70-75 degree days I ask myself why can't I have this every day? Then I ask myself, why do I need a 3 bedroom 2 bath house and should I sell it and tae the 150-175k profit and just bolt for the west coast. By myself a condo, a new convertible and start enjoying life a little more. I going over there in November to visit and if it's as great as everyone says I'm out of this crime ridden city.
