pt. loma
Hello,
We moved to san diego in may and have loved it here. My boys go to school at hearst elementary( in del cerro),
THANK YOU sasseborto and mewzikguy for the great advice and insight,
Del cero truly is a nice community.
The forum has been SOOOOO helpful in making the imp. decisions about renting vs buying, schools, summer camps, restaurants and such.
Now , we have to start looking to buy a house as we are renting now. My oldest is in the seminar program and will be in middle school next yr.
Hubby works in coronado and i work at otay mesa( close to the 805).
Somebody suggested Pt. Loma. I figure coronado is way off budget. Any suggestions on the commute, schools, housing options in Pt.Loma
thanks in advance

I think Del Cerro is going to be a better value than Point Loma. The better elementary school there (Sunset View) is in an area where homes are 1MM+ with ocean views. The other side of Point Loma (La Playa) is extremely expensive, multi-millions. The part of Point Loma that is north of Newport Ave. is very nice but gets a lot of plane noise. Also, there are a lot of apartments on Voltaire / Catalina and in Loma Portal (closer to the rosecrans district) that are kinda shabby and those kids can be a drag on the schools. Also Point Loma High has gone way downhill while Patrick Henry is still pretty good. However High Tech High/Middle is there and that is an amazing school
If you have a million+ to spend I would consider Point Loma but if you are looking in the 600k+ range I think I would stick with Del Cerro and Hearst.

I have heard mixed reviews about high Tech High, some people jsut rave about it and there are other who hate it.
Any comments.
Hubby is in training but could see better money down the line . If so, what is the price range for a 3 bdrm house in pt. loma and what areas are better than others.

HTH is more like a college than a traditional high school. If your kid is independent enough to thrive in that kind of a setting it can be amazing, but if you are looking for the same kind of High School experience most of us had, HTH is not going to offer that.
Point Loma is almost universally nice. A million is basically the floor in that area, you might find a small home in the 900k's in the best areas, or in the 800k's for something not as nice in the northern section or closer to the midway district.

There are some areas at the entrance of PLNU that are under a million, right around the new Fresh and Easy market.

No, PLNU and that area is 92106. We just purchased a little house in that area, and we love it.

Thank you for the info. When you say little house, what are the average house prices in that area. We are looking for 3 bdrm, 2 bath maybe
how about the commute to Otay mesa, and to coronado.
We are thinking about contacting a realtor in the next mth or so and start looking, eithe r in pt loma or mission hills/hillcrest
