I'm a recent graduate from college in Massachusetts. I graduated with a Criminal Justice degree and there are absolutly no jobs dealing with Criminal Justice opened in Mass. I searched on a country-wide website and found that the San Diego police department is hiring. I was wondering if anyone could give me feedback on a close place to live to the SD police department for a short commute, a cheap and also safe place? I would also like to be within 10 minutes of a beach, but thats not essential. I'm looking for a 2-3 bedroom apartment to share with one of my buddies from here. I also heard that you can't live on a cop's salary in CA thats why they need so many people. They make $42,000 a year to start and that seems fine to me because I don't need the nice cars or anything like that. Any information will be helpful. Thank You.

If you are young and can share with buddies I'd recommend Pacific Beach.

Pacific Beach and Mission Beach are good introductions to living in San Diego if you are looking for the stereotypical California lifestyle. Think long boardwalk filled with skateboarders, bikers, bars, bladers, surfers, tattoos, blondes, rollercoaster, etc. It's a pretty vibrant area and you'll definitely never feel alone if you live there.

Thanx for the information. How long would a commute be to the San Diego Police Department if I lived in one of these areas? Is it exepensive there? and is the myth about not being able to live on a cops salary true in SD? Appreciate all the feedback thanx.

Depends where you are stationed. Western Division HQ is just a 15 minute commute from the beaches. Downtown, Mid-City maybe 20 minutes.

Check out the SDPD web site for more info. Traffic moves in the core of the city, it's at a standstill in the suburbs.

Default Areas

I think you should live in Pacific Beach. It has tons of fun things to do and it would be a totally different experience for you being from Mass. It is somewhat centrally located so it would give you lots of options as far as job locations go. After you live here awhile you can decide which area you like best then move if you don't like PB. San Diego isn't that expensive if you rent, but it's expensive to buy a place here.

I've just been offered a job at a middle school in Chollas View, SE SD and am wondering just how bad that neighborhood is??? I currently teach in Harlem, NYC and plan to relocate to SD this summer, but am wondering if this neighborhood in SD is worse than NYC
