It depends on what your scene is. Pacific Beach is happening but it is loud and noisey, crawling with college students and there is crime. There are some neat areas in South San Diego like Normal Heights and Kensington if you like more urban environments. If your more of a suburban guy but still want to be near lots of young folks the Golden Triangle area (UTC) is really good and fairly close to the beach. You will find yourself driving 10 to 20 minutes to downtown though when you want to hit any cool bars.

This is hard to answer.

How much can you spend
Do you need a good school system
What kind of ammenities do you like in an area
Commute ?

There are lots of different areas in San Diego to suit alot of different tastes/requirements.

I'll be making around $42,000 or more as a cop for the San Diego Police Department. I'll be moving to a 2 bedroom apt. with a friend who will also be an officer. I dont need a good school system. I like a young crowd near the bars and beaches, but also far enough away where I won't be hearing young people going crazy at all hours of the night. Thanks for the responses

On that salary, I'd recommend North Park. It's a funky, up and coming neighborhood between hillcrest and the 15. Getting pricy, but nowhere as expensive as Hillcrest or the coastal areas.

The neighborhood has lots of cool restaurants, diverse bars, and you can do your day to day shopping in that neighborhood. Generally safe compared to areas to the east of 15. Lived in NP for 4 months and loved it, never had any safety issues. 20 mins to the beach, 20 mins to downtown. Can't go wrong.

Stay away from the East San Diego area. That is north of Ntnl City To The 8,from the 805 to SR-125.
Also North City Area,North of the 8 to SR 56 From 125 to Interstate 5
Some south bay areas are rough

Other than those areas you should be good

This is a gross over-generalization that includes some great neighborhoods.

Worst areas include Southeast SD ( http://www.sandiego.gov/neighborhoods-map/southeast.shtml (broken link) ), City Heights (Mid-City area), Barrio Logan/Logan Heights, parts of Mira Mesa, parts of Chula Vista (mainly the westside), East SD, and parts North Park.

Good areas with least crime are Tierrasanta, Scripps Ranch, La Jolla, Del Mar, Poway. There's more but I don't want this to get too long.

If you're going to be an officer for the SDPD, you'll quickly learn what areas are good and which ones are aren't.
