Default Where to live based on Salary?

I am a special education teacher looking to teach in San Diego but I don't know where to live based on the average yearly teacher salary-$40,000 to $50,000. I am looking to rent an apartment and I have a small dog (under 10 lbs). Any suggestions on where to live based on teacher salary so that I will be able to support myself?

Basically, it gets cheaper the further away from the water (except most parts of Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, National City, Oceanside). There are newer and higher end places inland also, but generally east is cheaper. So it depends on where you will teach.

How many years of experience do you have, and post-BA units? I think you are underestimating your salary.

What does L1 and L2 equate to out of state? I have looked at the salary scale at it is a little confusing. In my case, I have an MA + 80 credits. By June 09 I should have a doctorate. How would that fall on that salary schedule? It has to be more than the $41 K I am making here ....At least I would hope...

(I'm Also a special ed. teacher who now, after reading these posts, seems afraid no job is going to come about for 09-10 SY)

Sidrah -

A first year teacher with San Diego City Schools and a BA+90 (with M.A. or higher) is 60K per year. Here's the link, a level is one year of teaching. Follow the column to the right for education, and down for your years of experience.

Yes - you will have a job as a Sped teacher if you want one. Plus there's a HUGE need for Special Education university faculty. Even as an adjunct prof. you will work regularly if you care to.

L = level...duh. Never even crossed my mind.

Thank you so much for the info. A friend lives in Fremont and she said her district HR told her that schools in the state only accept up to 5 years from out of state. I will ask for and hope I get the 9 years of experience. Even at 5years, the income will be much better than what I am getting now. I am at 8 years in the current district and just this year broke the $40K mark...sad

I am going to be out there in November and will look around while I am there. It is hard to read all the posts about the lack of jobs and keep the faith! I plan to be out there again for SPring Break, so maybe there will be some chatter about the new school year by then. I hope so. I really like the area I was looking into and would love to have a job. I have already decided that either way I am going to go...now it is a matter of securing a job.

When I worked in SD a couple of years back I found a nice apartment in La Jolla, actually hated to leave my job and apartment...Yes further away the prices seem more reasonable, I was approximately 30 minutes from downtown SD..

Sidrah,

Are you using ed-join to monitor teaching jobs? Welcome to EDJOIN!

Many school districts will accept far more than 8 years - the school districts I worked with accepted 17. You are in a high demand field in San Diego. I would HIGHLY encourage you to attend as many of the recruitment events as you can in San Diego. I just checked on ed-join, right now only Intern meetings are scheduled, but keep checking.

If you'd like, IM me, and I would be happy to show you around while you're here.
