Default Julian area day trip

Any specific suggestions for things to do in this area in addition to the obligatory main street pies? (Easy) day hikes, seasonal colors? Farm U-Pick visits? Etc.

Hello bloom,

A Julian day trip is a lovely idea this time of year. One way to spice up your trip to apple pie heaven is to take a different way and a different way out. This is where you will see the change in colors of the backcountry. Unfortunately, some of the area near Cuyamaca are still burnt. However, that is part of the journey.

A couple of ideas: (1) Have you ever hiked up to the Julian Cemetery? It is right across from the fire station and offers some amazing views to go along with some history. (2) The areas in and around Julian also feature some wineries - check Wineries in Julian, California for more information.

We actually have to do research for an article on some of these wineries so I will be printing out this list after I finish this reply to you!

Have a safe and fun journey,
Alex

We recently went to Julian for the first time and it was a lovely afternoon! We had our apple pie at the Julian Pie Company. I thought it was interesting that there was an article in the shop from The Record Eagle in Traverse City, MI about the Grand Traverse Pie Company getting it's started from a San Diego resident who was inspired by this place. Whereas Julian is known for their apples, Traverse City is known for their cherries. We used to live in Traverse City before we relocated down to the Detroit area, so this was a particular point of interest. The pie was amazing by the way...everything I heard it was! I must also say, the cider was divine as well. That's saying a lot since cider mills are pretty popular in the mid west.

We drove in on 79 and I must say I was saddened by the fire devastation! I didn't realize how deeply the area was affected. I would have loved to see it before the fire. We took 78 hope and that was much more scenic, especially this particular open vista with a gorgeous view! That alone made going the long way home worth it. We also stopped at Dudley's Bakery, which was a "slice" of heaven if you like gourmet breads. Overall, it was a great little trip, especially for people from the east and mid west who want a taste of fall! The only thing I wonder is when do they typically hit peak foliage up there? We may have come a little early and I'd like to know for next year when is the best time to see the most color.

That devastation is due to 2003 Cedar Fire. It takes a long time for the land to heal.

Julian is a beautiful area, but my visit there was not very pleasant. There are no public restrooms in the town and no one will let you use theirs unless you buy food from a restaurant. I ended up with food poisoining from one of the local establishments and got sick in the parking lot of the Post Office, a government building and it still had no public restroom! I'm afraid to take my kids up there because they might have to pee in the street!
