Your budget of 2000-2500 a month for rental home would suggest Oceanside. North of 76 has new homes with new schools. You will not get much of a home in Carlsbad or Poway, unless you get a Condo or Apartment.

This is most definitely not true. 2500 a month would easily get you a nice 3-bedroom or a 4-bedroom in Carlsbad or Poway / Rancho Bernardo.

I wish I could rent my house. I already took a hit on the equity. Renting it would be another 1000 dollar loss from 2500...

Poway on a hot day can get over 100 degrees. You might as well stay in Phoenix. Carlsbad on a hot day maybe 80 degrees. Doesn't make sense to move from really hot to just hot.
On schools Poway is one large school district would be rate a 9 out of 10.
Carlsbad has is broken into 3 separate school districts.
Encinitas / San Dieguito (LaCosta) 9 out of 10
San Marcos (Central east Carlsbad) 8 out of 10
Carlsbad (Central Coastal and North) 8.5 out of 10
Remember within each school district you will some of the highest rated schools in the entire state in both school Districts as well as some just good rated schools.
Check out the following link to get test scores Academic Performance Index (API) (CA Dept of Education)
Once again stay out of the heat.

There are places within Poway school district that are not as hot as Poway, i.e., Del Sur, Rancho Penasquitos.

Is 90 degrees much better than 100? I was in Carmel Mtn Ranch today drove through 56 passing by Del Sur and it was hot. Nothing wrong with Heat, but she mentioned wanting to get away from the heat. Schools are the same, and they want to be closer to Orange County. Rents and real estate are both the same. I have 3000 sq ft rental in Carlsbad goes for 3100 a month. I just spoke to a friend who has a 2900 sq ft rental in Rancho Penasquitos and get 2900 in rent.
Rents and real estate are pretty similiar with each having a variaty in terms of neighborhoods

If your husband needs to commute to SD or OC a few times a week, Carlsbad is your choice. His life would be much harder if you choose Poway. Traffic here can be awful. In addition, Poway is inland and can be very hot in the summer- if you like the desert, Poway is for you, but if you want to enjoy beautiful beaches, Carlsbad is the place to be. Both places have great schools. If you're going to live in California, why live anywhere but near the ocean?

I agree with you that for the needs of the OP Carlsbad is a better choice. Just wanted to clarify that Poway itself is not the only choice when it comes to Poway schools.

Because while the temperature is more consistent closer to the ocean, you also have to deal with the marine layer. It can be sunny and pleasant 10 miles inland, and cold and dreary at the ocean.

It can be dreary at the coast in May or June but never cold and dreary unless you consider 66 cold. Most of the time it clears out about mid morning and comes back in late afternoon. I love it when it is slightly cool, perfect for walks down by the beach without getting too hot. In fact the longer you live here the more weather intolerant you get.
What happens when you move close to the coast here is that anything that is east is too hot? For example my friends and I think San Marcos and parts of Vista are too hot. When temps get in the 80's it is too hot. At the coast usually we are never too cold and too hot.
What do I know, I am leaving the north county coast and moving to Wyoming where there is real weather. I guess I am crazy.
