Smile Places to live in downtown SD from Chitown

Hi,

Young 30 something professional recently engaged and relocating to SD. Looking to find a new apartment in SD (hopefully) downtown or beachside. Coming from Chicago I enjoy the city life with good shows, restaurants, and clubs. But I also wouldn't mind a cool spot near the beach. Something like a gated off community with white picket fences is definitely out for now. Plan to be working at Scripps Memorial, so something nearby there might also be worth looking into.

Any recommendations?

So far, I have heard of Atria, Entrada, Allegro Towers, Camden Tuscany, Lofts at 777, Lofts at 677, Heritage, and Archstone

Don't know much about the area, but would like something reasonably quiet, a little upscale, with a low crime rate. I know I might be asking the impossible, but any info you can provide would be helpful. Also if you think any suburbs i.e. La Jolla, Carmel Valley etc. might be better-Please feel free to chime in....

Thanks!

Depends on what you like to do. Do you want to live in the thick of the city, walk everywhere, and have clubs and restaurants within blocks of your apartment? Or would you prefer a large, gated complex far away from all the hustle and bustle?

Downtown is good. Little Italy too. Bankers Hill / Hillcrest / University Heights is also worth a look - a bit more of a 'neighborhood'

Beach cities are more bars n' babes, not much in terms of culture. La Jolla, Encinitas, Del Mar are a bit more upscale but very 'small town'.

Inland central and north county is pretty much just families and stuff... not much to do, but not far away from the action.

If you are interested in downtown, look at this site if you haven't already: www.ccdc.com - It has alot of the new high rise projects under construction and gives you an idea of what downtown is like. Within downtown, there are distinct areas forming; Some areas like Little Italy are already developed but other areas like East Village (near Petco Park) where I live are expanding rapidly and I literally watch the city growing each day looking out my windows at the cranes and construction going on.

I had a friend who lived at Archstone downtown and liked living there. I used to stay there when she was away on business. It's close to the bay and restaurants, but away from the noise of the Gaslamp. It's safe and full of younger people (20's-30's) it seemed. It seemed the other folks lived in the nearby condo highrises.

Where do you live? I have friends that live at M2I and Fahrenheit. You should check out the "Skyscraperpage.com" forum and dig into the San Diego section of "City Compilations". Lots of news, discussions and rumors about downtown developments go on there that you might enjoy. There are a few other downtown resident in there, also. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=126473

Carmel Valley has the possibly the lowest violent crime rates in the city, although there is property crime there and everywhere.

Carmel Valley is a master planned community and with many rentals, you can walk to two seperate shopping centers (ralphs & vons).

There are many families there though, many kids running around and the high school (torrey pines).
