Default Wanting to Move to San Diego, what are the good areas

I'm looking to move out to san diego this summer with my girlfriend and was wondering what were some good areas to check out as far as "somewhat" affordable housing, diverse blend of people, music scene, good nightlife, jobs. We're coming from Chicago and need a change...can anyone help with some good advice.

How old are you? What do you consider affordable? Are you wanting to live close enough to nightlife that you can walk to it? What work field are you in? How far/long are you willing to commute? Will you be coming with a car?

We board denizens need more specifics before we can be of much help.
