That and the fact that it is Asian and Hispanic majority student body turns certain folks off.

There is just enough of an Asian (East Asian and South Asian) population so that you will not feel uncomfortable living here. You will be fine. Having said that, the number of South Asians in San Diego is relatively small overall, especially compared to the Bay Area. I worked in IT in both the Bay Area and here; while over 50% of the engineers in the Bay Area were from India, here its more like 20%. There were countless South Asian restaurants in the Bay Area, whereas here there are only a 5 or 6 or so that native South Asians have recommended to me.

There is no real, authentic South Asian city or neighborhood. Mira Mesa has perhaps the most, as many have said, but still not a lot. If you have the means, you should not live in Mira Mesa. It is mediocre by "north San Diego county" standards. The schools are OK but not great. The houses are for the most part old.

There are better schools, better houses, and overall better places to live that are nearby: Scripps Ranch, Del Sur, 4-S Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch, and even good ole' Rancho Bernardo. You will find South Asians scattered around those areas as well, and you would not feel unwelcome in any of those places. All of those places have a decent level of Asian diversity (but again, not at all like the Bay Area). And all of those places have pretty good schools, certainly better than Mira Mesa.
