"""""If you want a city in Colorado that like San Diego, look at Colorado Springs. San Diego and Colorado Springs are very similar communities with similar politics.""""
You are really going to compare San Diego and Colorado Springs as similar in politics??? I expect that somewhat because of the military presence here and the it being a very red town, but there are also sooo many mega churches that drive politics and conservatism here. Focus on the Family has their headquarters here in C/S. They are donating large amounts of money to ban the allowance of gay marriage in CA. The leader, Dr. James Dobson asked people to "pray for torrential rain" when the DNC was in Denver so that it couldn't go on and all those people in line would get wet and go home. No matter what political preference anyone is... I would not wish or pray for that to happen. I know this is off the topic of the original thread....... while I know San Diego is more conservative than other parts of CA. I am really hoping that it is all relative and that SD is NOT as conservative as the Colorado Springs area and El Paso County. I am a total dork- I can't figure out how you highlight a specific text in the blue box. |

Can you elaborate as to why these are the best cities for families? I love it around here, but S.D. schools leave a lot to be desired, and a typical family has to scrimp and save even with one kid, not to mention a few. I see how they all correlate in terms of people enjoying outdoor activities, and maybe that there are a lot of.....parks? I'm just not sure how these all fit onto a "Cities for Families" list. Can you elaborate?

Good library systems, nice parks, fairly good schools ( for big cities), excellent schools in the surrounding suburbs, lots of family activities (youth soccer/ softball/football/arts activities etc)., low crime- - -

I think you have to put low cost of living on that list, or at least salaries that match the cost of living....raising a family is expensive! That would, sadly, strike S.D. off the list. And then what if you wanted a good town for raising a family that was also conservative?

Almost agree with vegaspilgrim...IMHO Seattle beats San Diego for overall beauty. Seattle is full of forest and lakes and waterways everywhere, with the georgous Cascades in the distance, and it is nearly all natural. Seattle has done much to keep historical buildings, parks, etc. SD on the other hand, has a nice bay and the Coronado Bridge and Pt Loma are nice backdrops. It is a desert. The beaches areas are dirty and trashed. Most of the old beautiful neighborhoods in SD have been ripped down, and with a few exceptions, the zoning in the city has been horrible. The palms are all trucked in and everything requires extensive irrigation. There is no money, so the freeways are laced with dead foilage and trash.
The thing with SD is there is just so much poverty. Much of central city is inhabited by people from all over the globe and a big percentage are on some type of assistance, and so many having kids they cant afford. Diversity is one thing but the melting pot in SD is so huge and has spread so far that its hard to find neighborhoods that feel clean and safe, and when you find them those areas are $750K and up, even in this down market. People think of SD as La Jolla and Coronado, they see the post cards and get all excited. I think its truly turning into a third world country. But I must be in the minority because they are coming here in droves. SD has been a nice ride but its time for us to go to make way for others who think its paradise. So my vote, I'd take Denver, I think the quality of life in Colorado is superior to anywhere in 20+ million SoCal. |

You are in the minority- - when surveys are done about what cities people want to move to if they could relocate anywhere, the top two are always NYC and San Diego- -
