top 10 "bad" areas of SD? (San Diego, Escondido: condos, crime rate)

Can someone tell me what areas of San Diego they wouldn't want to live with children? I don't want this to become an offensive thread and it is PURELY opinion. No need to argue with one another.
I'm looking at these nice condos...but they are all in Logan Heights..Golden Hills...Paradise Hills....the 92154,92139,92102 area codes.
I'm from San Diego but only know about 1/5 of the city, I would say. As it is large.
I know I have heard about a lot of bad things regarding those areas...but I'm wondering what other people know. THANKS!

Search the older threads. Bad areas have been discussed to death. If you have a specific condo or neighborhood you want to know about, post the address.

Here is some actual data but be aware it can be hard to understand as some areas like Mira Mesa and Clairemont have a high number of crimes like burglaries because:
a. The area is huge
b. The area includes industrial areas like Convoy St.

Well there are only a few truly dangerous areas of the city.
If you are raising a family you want to be in an area without a heavy gang presence and an area where murders, armed robberies and sexual assaults are not common.

Most of the city is pretty safe. There are 3 areas that come to mind to me as being really usafe :

1. City Heights
2. Encanto
3. Logan Heights

In these 3 areas you have poverty and gangs and lots of street crime.
And the schools in these areas are not where you would want to send your kids to.

Actually, I wouldn't describe Encanto and Logan Heights as "really unsafe". Poor, yes, truly dangerous, no. I know a family that lives in Encanto near 69th and Madera, I've been to their place many times. I never felt unsafe, even leaving at 11 pm. Some areas south of Imperial are spotty, but those are called Skyline and Bay Terraces, I think.

Downtown is fairly dangerous, there is a lot of gang activity in Chollas View / Lincoln Park area.

Right ESmith143 ......... Encanto is a large area and its not an entirely dangerous area.

The parts of Encanto that you mentioned are the sore spots.
Skyline, Lincoln Park, Bay Terraces, along with City Heights and Logan Heights are considered heavy gang areas.

The average in San Diego is 35.98 crimes per 100,000 residents, so as you can see by the numbers, these areas are much worse than average.

Some might be surprised that the usual suspects (Logan, Encanto, etc.) are not on the list, but the reality is that it's the busy shopping, nightlife, and tourist areas that get the most crime, not residential neighborhoods.

I'd like to see statistics of crimes per square mile.

In your list, San Pasqual is #5. San Pasqual is an agricultural community on the edge with Escondido that happens to include Wild Animal Park. It is around 14,000 acres and it's home to whopping 46 residents. Since the beginning of 2008, there were 2 assaults, 3 commercial burglaries, and 15 thefts in the area - in all likelihood, all 20 took place in WAP. But, if you divide 20 crimes by 46 residents, you get a very scary number.

As you alluded to, and as Esmith explained, every one of your top ten worst crime areas are really the result of statistical anomalies. Kearney Mesa and San Pasqual have low resident populations. Most of the rest have moderate populations that draw in huge numbers of workers, shoppers, or tourists, that give criminals a large population on which to prey, (the numerator) while having a modest resident population (the denominator). I wonder what the NEXT 10 highest crime rate areas are.
