Sure there are. Are you African-American or in a multi-racial family?

I'm caucasian with a multi-racial child (caucasian, african-american, and a little american-Indian). I was just wondering because the advertisement-type photos I've seen of SD (like school/business type websites) look very diverse but a lot of the regular photos, like the ones in the 'Images' thread, don't seem as much so.

It depends on the area really. I grew up in Clairemont and it was very diverse. In elementary school is was a great mix of white, black, asian, etc. Then I went to high school in Lakeside where there wasn't much diversity at all.

San Diego's pretty diverse, although there is relatively high Anglo population compared to other big cities like say Los Angeles. Still diverse, in my opinion, although not as diverse as LA.

Either way, I consider San Diego to be a very tolerant place.

absolutely. I have asian, africian-american and hispanic neighbors in a pretty affluent area of SD. I would say mainly though its white. Thing about SD, I dont see much of an issue with diversity. Its a non-issue really...which is refreshing coming from a place in the midwest that was highly segregated. I agree--tolerant more than any other place Ive ever been, so much so its just not discussed at all.

The whole city of SD is very diverse. Aacole said it right. It depends on where you live. You have the military stationed in Miramar and Coronado Island, you have the LGBT/bohemians in Northpark and Hillcrest, you have the Hispanics and Blacks in East County, the Chinese/Koreans/Japanese in Kearny Mesa/Clairmont, you have the Filipinos and Indians in Mira Mesa, the Vietnamese/South Eastern Asians in City Heights and Linda Vista, and the white conservatives in North County such as Scripps Ranch, Carmel Valley, and Rancho Bernardo. Remember these are concentrations of them in those areas, not exclusive. The below data is from 2000 consensus taken from Wikipedia.
  • White Non-Hispanic (49.3%)
  • Hispanic/Latino of any race (25.4%)
  • Asian (13.6%)
  • Black/African American (7.6%)
  • Two or more races (3.1%)
  • Hawaiian and Pacific Islander alone (0.4%)
  • American Indian/Alaska Native alone (0.4%)
  • Other Race alone (0.2%)

Come on in, the water is fine. San Diego is very much a diverse city. Here's a Census link showing the breakdown of races in the county (ubringliten has already provided city stats).

San Diego County, California - ACS Demographic and Housing Estimates: 2005-2007

Not that it should matter, but the Blacks make up only 5.4% of the county's population. You'll see plenty of mixed races around, which is the future of this country.

According to most estimates San Diego County is roughly 50% White.

The next most populace group is Latinos. Followed by Asians.

Blacks are definitely the smallest group.

There is a sizeable Black concentration in South East San Diego and City Heights. And smaller concentrations in Chula Vista and Spring Valley.

Like other posters have mentioned, San Diego is not heavily diverse when compared to other large cities.

There seems to be a Black exodus from California in general and San Diego in particular.

I've lived in SD for many years. It is not nearly as diverse as it was, let's say 5-10 years ago. The census on blacks (7.6%) doesnt say much when our population is in the millions!!! It is not nearly as diverse and tolerant as in L.A. As others have said, it depends on the area. North and East County are mostly white. National City/Chula Vista are mainly mexican and filipino. The inner areas are diverse (North park, City Heights, Clairemont, etc...) Asians populate Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa and Linda Vista in crazy numbers. I believe a white woman with a biracial child will fit in because there is a lot of that out here, but I do feel the black population has diminished from SD.
