Hey, try checking the San Diego Weekly Reader free magazine. You can pick them up at various places such as the public library. It may have events advertised and indicate if they are free. They also have a website: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/home/

Check weekly because they post events a week or so before.

The San Diego Port Tenants Association is giving San Diegans a gift to ring in the New Year -- a big fireworks show on San Diego Bay. The best viewing spots will be anywhere along the north and central areas of the bay. The port has several waterfront parks that offer observation points -- Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Spanish Landing, Tuna Harbor and Embarcadero Marina Park North.
The city of San Diego funded the event until 2005, when it asked the Port Tenants Association to take on its production. The show begins on New Year’s Eve at midnight with fireworks being discharged near the North Embarcadero area and Embarcadero Marina Park and Seaport Village.
The association secured financial contributions from Hornblower Cruises & Events, the Midway Museum, Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina, San Diego Marine Exchange, Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, Big Night San Diego, San Diego Harbor Excursions, Anthony’s Seafood Group, Seaport Village, Tom Ham’s Lighthouse and the Bali Hai Restaurant. FireworksAmerica matched the donations and R.E. Staite offered a discounted rate for the use of its barges.
Parking will be tight. The Port of San Diego recommends carpooling or taking the San Diego Trolley. Trolley service will be available all night long on New Year’s Eve and there are stations in close proximity to the fireworks area. The Metropolitan Transit System, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) are sponsoring free rides on New Year’s Eve plus all-night service on select bus and all trolley routes. To view the trolley’s holiday schedule, go to SDMTS Home.
