I'm assuming you live around the Mt. Helix, Calavo Gardens, Casa De Oro area? That is very nice out there. However, isn't that actually unincorporated SD County with a La Mesa address for post office reasons versus La Mesa proper?

What is North of the 8? I was thinking of moving to La Mesa but now I'm not so sure.

So, what I am hearing is that La Mesa, East of the 15 Freeway, San Marcos, Vista, El Cajon all have crime problems and are not good areas to buy a home, correct?? I am seeking to buy a home next year in San Diego while prices are low as an investment. We love the area and would like to retire there.
What can any of you bring to the table here on your take of what areas to buy into? I would Appreciate what sound advice anyone can give. A California girl but never lived in San Diego.

I from La Mesa. And out of that whole area of SD county its the best city. Its nice to live in pretty average, but its not El Cajon or Santee which is good. Nice the houses that are affordable there are nice just stay away from the freeway areas.

Santee is not really a place for an African American to live. The city has pratically no diversity, and it's expensive.

Between Santee/"Klantee" and Lakeside, it's one of the most intolarent cities in San Diego if your Hispanic or Black. I've gone to the Best Buy and Vons in Santee a couple of times, and I swear certain workers were staring me down, and would follow me througout the store like I was going to steal something. I didn't like that, and actually confronted one of the vons employees, and he finally back off, and apologized. It's like some people in Santee get all freak out when they see a young black or hispanic male walking into a store. Automatically they are singled out. Not too mention some of the nasty stares I get from while sitting at a stop light on Mission Gorge Rd from all the Hicks in there big trucks. A friend used to live in Klantee, so that is why I went there, but now since he moved, I have not been to that hater place in a long time. I have never once in my life seen a confederate flag, but Santee was the first. Even some Bro's fly the flag from there trucks! I couldn't believe it.

Regarding La Mesa, it's a nice city, of course you got your nice spots and bad spots, the nicer newer areas of La Mesa are towards Lake Murray and near San Carlos. The not so great places are around University Ave, and of course El Cajon Blvd

Over the years it's kinda gotten worse I guess, I believe it's because the lack of good businesses off University and El Cajon blvd, Gangster from SouthEast SD, City Heights, North Park, College Area. The area is getting run down. There was a robbery off University at some travel agency a couple of years ago, some black guy robbed the place and shot the owner a couple of times, but the owner had a gun on him so he fired back one shot, and killed the robber right out front of his business.

When I first heard of this happening, I was like "Daaaammmn" this crazy stuff is going on in La Mesa?

Overall though, La Mesa is still a nice place, but overtime I see it turning into another El Cajon, it's sad to say All the jobs there are low paying, and it doesn't serve the middle class well. Plus the city is broke, and it will take a long time for them to recover.
