Depends on location. We did 3-star in Palm Springs/Desert and that is fine. Sorrento Valley would likely be OK too. But a sketchy area may be dicey - just scan what the 3-star choices are.

If you are just looking for a cheap place to stay in SD in a safe area, you really might want to check out the Banana Bungalow. You will need an out of state id. The place is located on the beach in PB.

thanks for the link callmesteph.... Do you know anyone who has stayed there, and what there experiences were? I've never stayed in a hostel, it sounds quirky and interesting.... but I am a little nervous too... Is it skeevy or decent?

The cheap rooms in the banana bungalow are in the dorm rooms. I would describe staying there as a lot like going to summer camp. You have a lot of college students from places like Brazil or Europe who are traveling to see the US and decide if they are going to visit California they need to have some sort of California beach experience. A lot of the travelers don't know that many people and looking for people to join up with them to do something like visit the San Diego Zoo.

There may also be a relaxed notion of privacy. When I stayed there, there were some Brazilian girls who had no problem changing in the room in the presence of me and my boyfriend. When I was talking to them later about it, they weren't intending to be exhibitionists, but assumed that since everyone was nearly naked in their swimsuits, walking around in their underwear in the rooms wouldn't be that big of deal. I am the type of person who wouldn't have cared if in that situation if they were naked in front of my boyfriend, but if you are more modest than I perhaps you might want to pay a little more for a hotel room.

The place isn't upscale. But if you are looking for a cheap safe place to stay near the areas you were talking about, I think its an excellent choice.

I recommend Motel 6 as well. Just make sure it's in a decent area and you should be good to go!

Before you pick out a hotel to stay in, check out this site - Bedbugregistry.com. A lot of hotels are getting infested now, even four star ones. So be on the safe side and check it out.

The Good Nite is fine except for the fact that there are signs posted stating something to the effect of : "The state of California has determined this site to contain materials which have been identifed as known carcinogens.

The Day's Inn on Adobe Falls Road is right off the 8, and has rooms with full kitchens, and is very reasonable. I stayed in both, and neither is great, but I would choose the Day's Inn again because it is easier to save money making your own food.

Thanks "moved" for the bed bug site! I Booked at Howard Johnson on 3330 Rosecrans Street, San Diego Ca.... It isn't listed to have any bedbug encounters!! Do you think this hotel will be okay for our stay? As I said before I don't need much, but they had a decent amount of good reviews and the room will have a fridge microwave and wireless internet... parking too yay! Anyone let me know if you think this is not a good deal... I booked for 49 per night. Can cancel if needed.
