Search the forum for some older posts on the area. It has a high crime rate but is also the most dense and central part of the city. There are neighborhoods in North Park where crime is not an issue and neighborhoods where it is a major issue. 10+ years ago it was very bad in some places.

The major problem spots are El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue, in particular as you head east towards the 805 freeway. The city has never been able to get a handle on vice crime in the El Cajon Boulevard corridor and doesn't appear to have any intention of doing so in the future.

The area has seen a lot of investment in recent years and has become very popular with young families, hipsters, and older gay couples. I lived in North Park for several years and never really had any issues with crime, but it really depends on where exactly you choose to live in the neighborhood.

That is completely uneducated. Yes, it is a bit higher then the city wide average but still much lower then the US average (since San Diego is much safer then most of America). I can think of several places off the top of my head which are worse (Skyline anyone? San Ysidero?). It is a middle class area which still retains pockets of low income so there are risks but over all it isn't to bad and is much better then most places in the country. I'd choose to live else where but that's mainly because the housing stock is old (1930's through 1950's) but the upside is many place retain a neighborhood feel and are walkable with great locally owned restaurants and stores like Left's Chicago Style Pizza or Tioli's Crazy Burger. The big turn off for some people is that around 10%-12% of the population is black but I find that idea to be racist and reject it. Over all blacks only make up about 2%-3% of San Diego's population and I get offended when people say an area is bad just because blacks live there or because they make up a larger percentage of the population in a neighborhood. Most of these people are hard working, well educated, and take as much pride in their homes as anyone else if not more.

north park has never been bad to me personally outside of a few apartments here and there...definitely not "rampant" with crime lol
