Hi everyone,

I am a Spanish graduate student moving to SD in August/Sept. to continue my PhD at UCSD. I've been reading the posts about SD but still do not really clearly see which neighborhoods are the best for me to live in. I am vegetarian, love art & talking about politics and very committed in community life. And I am passionated by the sea -which does not necessariliy mean the beach, and even if I adore University-life, I don't think I would really appreciate 20 year-old undergrads partying next to my house all day long... Is there any neighborhood you would advice?

Thanks a lot from sunny Paris!

Look in the UTC area. That area really caters to UCSD students and it will be a comfortable place to live while you are working on your studies. UCSD is not a party school (no time to party when your a science major), so there are not the same issues as you'd have living near a school like SDSU.

I'll bet you would like Hillcrest/Normal Heights/Kensington, and there is a shuttle from the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest to campus at UCSD.

Since you are starting graduate school, you will most likely switch locations after you meet colleagues and friends in school, so it will not be a long term commitment. Recommend to ask current grad students in your dept to get an idea of locations.

My recommendation is to get at close to the university as possible, and close to a bus stop, because your life will revolve around your research and long work hours. Good starting locations would be UTC (University City) and the area of La Jolla just south of campus.
A little further out, but popular is the Pacific Beach area. It is close to the beach, stores, bars, and the university, with post/grad and professional students from Scripps, Salk, Burnham, an UCSD.

The OP is probably done with graduate school by now, since the OP was dated 2007.

Wow...don't honestly know how I came across this old topic. Talk about resurrecting a thread. Well, my comments are valid for any prospective or new UCSD graduate.
