Is Sammy's Woodfired Pizza any good, or more a chain+ type place?

Sammy's is fine, but not great. The pizza may be cooked in a wood fired oven, but it doesn't taste any better than what you get at your average restaurant which serves pizza. I don't go to Sammy's because it is often busy (with line up), the pizza is not particularly outstanding, and they are somewhat expensive given what you get.

Have you ever tried California Pizza Kitchen ? I like them - you can get a regular pepperoni pizza or go for the exotic flavored ones. You have to be pretty daring because some of the pizzas are unique, like mango pizza, but they are very fresh and good).

They are both pretty chain-ey.... the food doesn't always seem fresh / homemade and is kind of slapped together (and often served by a teenage staff) CPK is a bit more of a fine-dining place.

However if you are looking for the CA-style pizza, one really good place is Alladin (Hillcrest). It is a family-owned and run lebanese restaurant but they make some excellent, unique pizzas. They don't have some of the more bizarre options (bbq chicken, etc) but what they do have is really made with care.

SWP is pretty good but like mentioned above, it tastes the same almost as if it's not woodfired.
