need help selling my husband on SD
I am trying to sell my husband on the idea of relocating to San Diego from Minneapolis! We both love warm weather and the idea of being able to exercise outdoors year round.
We are coming for a visit in April. Any suggestions on where to stay? We would love a nice resort/spa with access to trails for running, preferably by the beach. I want it to be a great visit for us. What would you recommend we do/see?
My husband is a family practice/urgent care doc and he is concerned that Ca is saturated with docs. Is this true? What about the economic condition of the state? How badly are your schools suffering, if at all? Minnesota is known for great schools so living here I always here how bad other state schools are but I wonder if this is an accurate statement or just pro-Minnesotans talking!
I have always wanted to live in SD ever since I visited La Costa Spa and Resort as a child with my parents. I am looking forward to visiting to see if it is still somewhere we could live. I know there are pros and cons to everywhere but for me, someone who suffers from SAD big time, weather cancels out alot of negatives.
I appreciate any insight.
Thanks

In April, the weather should be in the 70s during the day and a bit chilly into the evenings. Being out in this weather while knowing that your friends/family back home are still in the snow should be enough to sell your husband on SD. If not, you can remind him that it rarely gets below 50 here when you guys are experiencing sub zero temps. The outdoors in socal can be accessed year round! I'm not sure about the market for doctors, but from what I hear, the medical/health industry is one of the most recession proof out there.

Hey Runinthesun, I too am in Minneapolis and will be out in SD next week to look for housing. I am there with you as far as SAD and weather.

What area of SD are you looking at? Do you have school age children? I'm looking into Carlsbad or Encinitas. Would love to hear from you when you get back. Have a great visit.

Yes, two small children and am looking exactly at those areas...Carlsbad and Encinitas. Feel free send me a private message. Sounds like we're on the same page.

Good luck to both of you. If it wasn't for the harsh winters, I'd have no problem living in Minneapolis. I've got friends who live in Carlsbad (Bressi Ranch and Calavera Hills) who have no complaints. Check out La Costa and Aviara, as well.

I can't speak highly enough of my hometown, Encinitas. It's a diverse city where you can live by the beach in Cardiff by the Sea or Leucadia in a funky little shack or on a sprawling horse property ranch in Olivenhain or in tract family communites in Village Park. We have miles of great beaches, world class surfing, a laid back So Cal feel, and we're just 25 minutes north of downtown san diego and a couple hours south of LA.

The economy is in freefall and quickly getting worse we are entering a depression, however a dr could still make it I think especially with all the socialistic programs in medicine on the forefront(profits might be limited by the government though)

On the upside the average cost of a home in the county has now fallen to below $300,000 so if you can afford to buy (and find a bank which is actually lending) now is an excellent time to buy. Just four years ago the average price was over $500,000. due to the worst recession in 80 years prices will likely keep falling for at least another year too so you could move here, rent so you get to know the place and be sure you like it, then buy in a year when prices bottom out. You'd be getting in on the ground floor as the economy once again starts to improve.
