Default Are there occupancy limits for apartments in CA?
Basically, can a couple with a 5 year old child live in a one bedroom apartment? I know in NJ, that wasn't legal so I'm wondering if it differs here.

There is no occupancy limit in San Diego. They had one for a time but it was ruled unconstitutional.

Programs such as Section 8 housing use 2 per bedroom, plus 1 to determine if a family is over or under housed.

The common scenario is a single parent with two children... the children would have the bedroom and the parent would be expected to sleep in the living room...

The Uniform Building Code, which most jurisdictions in CA adopted, also has occupancy standards that generally apply to hotels, motels and shelters... it is based on square footage and generally works out to be a rather high number of occupants per unit.
