How do people go about finding an apartment (rental) in San Diego, other than searching Craigslist? For example, I previously lived in NYC, where people often use a real estate agent even to rent (not just to buy), and I currently live in Wash DC, where there is a comprehensive, annual apartment guidebook publication, and a couple main websites, that list all the main apartment buildings in the area. Is there any such publication or a certain website(s) for San Diego? Surely there must be some method other than just newspaper classifieds and Craigslist! Please advise! Many thanks!

p.s. We are a young, professional couple (no kids or pets) and want to move downtown near the Gaslamp area, preferably to one of the cool new loft buildings with good views.

Apartment complexes advertise through sites like apartmentguide.com and forrent.com. Free guides are available in many grocery stores.

As far as I know, downtown is mostly privately-owned condos, you'd have to use craigslist to get one of those.

At major grocery stores like Vons, Albertsons, and Ralphs, there are racks of free magazines. Some of these are apartment listings - they list rentals by location, price, number of bedrooms etc. You can do a lot of the leg work at home with a computer (find a good price, chart out where it is, give them a call) and then go visit if it sounds right. I've tried a few of these listings and the apartments which Ihave visited were excellent, good, or acceptible. There were no junky ones where they are trying to fool you to think it's great but it's trashy.

If you are at a college or university, they may have a notice board or student services which may help connect those who want to rent with those who have something to rent.

I've signed up with a rental agency who was supposed to help me find an apartment. But after paying them $30, they pretty much provided me with information that I could have gotten from the free magazines. It was a rip off.
