Default la costa canyon or carlsbad high

If you had a choice, which high school would your send your child to?

Is one significantly better than the other or are they comparable?

IMO, La Costa Canyon is better academically, athletically, and in terms of campus culture (clubs, activities, etc.). LCC is newer, has generally better facilities, and a supportive community of parents. It's a big reason we bought where we did to send our kids to LCC. I wouldn't say CBHS is a bad school, but since you asked, I'd pick LCC.

I don't know if you're a troll on this board or what (reviving a thread that is 10 months old?), but I don't want people to think you actually know what you are talking about on this topic.

LCC has a 2009 base API score of 817 (up from 805 in 2008). Note, that's for all students. For example, white non hispanic students score even higher, with 838. It's 2008 API statewide rank is a 9 out of 10.

Carlsbad High's API 2009 base score is 813, up from 806 in 2008. It's nearly identical but lower than LCC. It also scores 9 out of 10 on the statewide 2008 API ranking.

Your claim that LCC is "one of the most underperforming affluent schools in the county" is hard to nail down because it is so vague and could be true or not, depending on how you stretch the statistics.

As is your claim that "carlsbad doesnt' have as much trouble with drugs." How would you know? How could you quantify that from one year to the next? Impossible. Just an unsubstantiated claim presented as fact.

Like I said in my original post to this thread earlier this year, they are both good to above-average high schools that parents should be proud to send their kids. To disparage a good school like LCC on a board like this is irresponsible and needs to be tempered so people don't get a false impression.

A point to be made, though, is that LCC is substantially more "affluent" than Carlsbad High. LCC has average parent education rating 3.96 and 9% free lunches. Carlsbad is 3.64 and 17%. So, higher affluence somehow fails to translate into better scores. LCC is also more affluent than Poway High (3.77 and 11%), but Poway High managed to pull off the API score of 845.

encinitan, you are right, LCC is still a good school and I was being very critical of it. but i think that esmiths data proves my point. LCC, a very affluent school should be performing at a much higher level [in terms of ca state testing] but fails to do so. Why is this? Well im not sure.

And as far as drug problems go, you are right I dont have statistical evidence. But i have seen too many friends and relatives go through LCC and become messed up to not warn people. So I am sorry, but in my personal opinion LCC is overrated.

and thats great that LCC achieved a 9/10 for the statewide rank. BUT they also achieved a 1/10 for the similar schools ranking. That doesnt happen from chance. It is underperforming when compared to similar schools- and thats a fact.

In the end though, I think we can both agree that whichever school your child attends, its ultimately up to the parents to ensure their childs success.

oh and do me a favor and list the "affluent" public schools in the county.
which one has the worst api? Not westview, rancho bernardo, poway, torrey pines, canyon crest, la jolla, coronado, scripps ranch, valhalla....

the worst are la costa canyon and san dieguito!

btw a 838 API score for caucasian students is actually pretty low considering the affluence of the white population. This just shows how little you know.
Caucasian students population API scores at selected high schools: San Pasqual: 840, San Marcos: 874 , and Mission Hills:856. And these schools arent even considered affluent!
When you break down the data, LCC is not that great. And the API of the hispanic population is absolutely horrible. 679? yuck, even Oceanside hispanics have a 709, 30 points higher.

now do you understand why I think that LCC is overrated?

Default In all honesty...

To be honest, both schools are great schools. Actually, my brother graduated from LCC two years ago and I'm about to enroll in LCC for next year. Both of you are right on the part about which school is good. Both schools have problems with drugs, all schools do. Both schools have good test scores, they just may not be the best. Both schools have amazing programs, but excel in different things. Both schools thrive in academics, but CHS for the most part, has a better performing arts program, but LCC is generally better in sports. LCC also has a good performing arts program, and CHS has a good sport program. If you're more artsy, you would probably do better at CHS, but if you're more sporty, LCC might be the better choice. Or LCC for art, and CHS for sports. The point I'm trying to make is both of you are right, and both of you are wrong. Both schools are amazing schools.

You could always look in San Elijo Hills and send your child to San Marcos High which is being rebuilt as we speak and the test scores speak for themselves..San Elijo is considered the "affluent" area of San Marcos..there are some nice houses there..
