If you're like me, I love exploring different areas of cities that I'm visiting. Big fan of North Park here, but you should check out the adjacent neighborhoods below:

South Park (along 30th/Fern St, from Upas to about Grape St)
University Heights (along Park Blvd and Maryland and Cleveland Sts)
Bankers Hill (along 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Aves, from Robinson south towards downtown)
Hillcrest (University Ave from Lewis St to Park Blvd)
South Mission Hills (Drive down Reynard Way thru the canyon and venture into the hills above) I lived in this area for years - quiet and close to downtown and Hillcrest
Morley Field(South of University Ave, north of Upas, east of Florida)
Mission Hills (Big bucks, along Ft. Stockton and Sunset)
Midtown (Vicinity of India and Washington Sts) drive up into the hills overlooking the 5 freeway and airport
Golden Hill (east of the 5 freeway, along Broadway, B and C Sts to 30th st)
Normal Heights and Kensington (along Adams Ave, from Park Blvd to Aldine St)
East Village (downtown, in the area around the baseball stadium)
Little Italy (along India St)

All of the areas above are safe and neighborhoody. OB is great, but as Sassberto said, during the summer that area is very crowded.

Hey we decided on the other north park one, atleast for a couple months until we get jobs and can afford something a little bigger in OB... If you are serious about the cottage it is on Saratoga and Abbott its small but close to the water
