One more place to check out is Sacramento. It has a very diverse middle-class population.

LA has many more African Americans living there, although the black population has dramatically dropped over the last 10 years. SD is cool in all, you just have to search the neighborhoods, not being black enough just wont cut in San Diego or any California city. La Mesa near University Ave, kinda by 70th st. is pretty chill, not sure about the amount of blacks living in the area though, you also could check out Rolando. I have homie that lives close to College Ave. It's looks kinda ghetto in certain spots, but there isn't much crime or anything generally bad going on in Rolando. A lot of nice older homes around in the area. I think you would like Rolando, I take back my suggestion of El Cajon don't go there, too many backward Rednecks and people driving big lifted trucks for no apparent reason.

You know African-American is a term for folks of African ancestry living in America.

I live there. Rolando is an old suburb that is now an inner-city neighborhood on the east side of San Diego near SDSU. It is a mix of white, black, asian, latino, college kids. It is a very mixed area, but most of the black people live in apartments and most of the homeowners are white. We have one neighbor who is mixed-race black / white and another black family lives around the corner. It is becoming very popular with older gay couples (white).
In the commercial areas of the east side you will see a lot more blacks, but they are tend to live in the areas just west (City Heights) or just south (College Grove / Lemon Grove). Rolando is a good area for a middle-class black person who doesn't want to live in the hood or an all-white area. Just avoid living too close to any of the main streets, there is a lot of petty crime. And unfortunately.. most of the blacks in the area tend to be of the 'hood type.

sounds like a cool neighborhood.
I guess we want to stay out of an all-White, all-Latino area so we won't be the minority in an area thats hostile.
if there are mellow Latinos & whites who are cool, thats good.
I sure don't want to live in an all-African-American neighborhood thats full of crime, just because its all African-American !

Rolando is chill, I like many of the smaller older homes which have a sense of character. You would like it much more than boring ass La Jolla that's for sure

How bout Lemon Grove, LaMesa or Spring Valley ?
Are they well representated with an African-American population ?
Are they more of a middle-class feel to them ?

Actually, San Diego is more like 7-8% black
