What about La Mesa, Oceanside, El Cajon, Lemon Grove, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, Vista and Coronado? I believe all of them have decent African Americans populations with Lemon Grove at around 12-13% having the highest percentage.

Oak Park has high number of blacks as well, but gangs are in the area, Lemon Grove is more low income and also has a small gang problem because of the Trolley. It takes you directly into SouthEast Diego.

I personally saw like 5 Bloods jump some other black gangsters at the trolley depot a couple years back. Normal Heights used to have a higher number of Hispanic and Black residents, but with all the gentrification that has been running rampant in the past few years, many whites have moved in bought many old homes, and have changed the area for good. They have made the area more expensive and less ghetto looking by fixing up many properties, unlike 10 years ago, Normal Heights and North Park were pretty ghetto and bad neighborhoods. Today you can walk the streets with no problems. Yeah you still have bad pockets of NH and NP though.

Oceanside has a large black population, not sure what the percentage is today, but back in the 90's the whole East Side of Oceanside was mostly all Black and Somoan/Pacific Islander. It's more mixed with Hispanics now days. O Side has always had a really bad gang problem, it was crazy years ago.

What's going to happen in the future in San Diego is the more gentrification takes place, the more minorities start leaving the inner city neighborhoods to other San Diego Suburbs like El Cajon, La Mesa, Lemon Grove because many upper middle class Whites start taking over the older "Bad" neighborhoods slowly little by little which creates the reversal of the White Flight. Basically the Younger White Professionals that used to live in the Suburbs, are tired of the boring lifestyle, and conservative mindset of the burbs. So this leads Whites back into the Urban Core.

I'm not saying that every minority neighborhood will change to all white someday, but the closer you get to Downtown SD the more changes you will see.

Examples: Sherman Heights used to be really dangerous neighborhood, I remember back in High School I took the trolley down to 32nd and Commercial, got off and went to my friends house. I remember seeing gang members literally hanging out on the corner of a street just chilling with baseball bats waiting to crack some heads! Today the area is changing, and has cleaned up quite a bit since the late 90's. I see white folks walking around now when in the past they would never dare step past the bridge East into Sherman. The Whites have bought many of the old Victorian style homes, fixed them up, and are now living in them. You still have alot of Mexicans in Sherman Heights, but they will slowly be forced out because of the higher rents and home values.

This also goes for South Park, many White hipsters have moved into South Park, and cleaned the place up. SP was really run down, and still is in certain spots, but gentrification is written all over South Park today, and many Mexican families have left the area because they can't afford the higher property taxes, while White Artist are slowly are creeping in. They are changing the area, by making it higher class, and uppidy.

The whole entire out skirts of downtowns neighborhoods are becoming more mixed with White residents, it all started because of the construction of the new Padres Stadium and developers buying up property which turns into expensive condo's specifically geard to attract higher class whites back to urban sector which they spend money= a win win situation for the City and redevelopment agency. What's crazy is how fast this change has occurred. Things have changed big time in the last 5 years. Even from the early 2000's downtown SD had nothing going on, and was run down for the most part.

Coronado having black residents? Now that's funny I have never seen black people in Coronado ever.

If it wasn't for white people, what would this city do?

I'm just playin but for real, wealthy white people make ghetto ass neighborhoods all nice again. It's called gentrification, look it up. I personally hate it, because it forces poor minorities out of of there old neighborhoods, and changes the culture of it as well.

It's been happening in Atlanta, many black neighborhoods are now mostly white, and the former run down sections of the ATL "The Projects" are now all nice and filled with new condo's for that caters to rich white folks. I'm just speaking the truth.

Oakland is another example, many area's that used to be black and hispanic neighborhoods have been taken over by whites from Frisco, the reason I said that "If it wasn't for White People", is because cities rely on them for tax revenue. They obviously can afford to spend more money, so cities rather cater to them and in return they start investing back into the community, this creates a higher tax base for cities. Since San Diego doesn't have a large percentage of blacks living here, or a large black middle class, white folks are the chosen ones here. Not even the rich Mexicans can compare

Just telling it like it is. It sucks but it's true.

You're a bit confused about San Diego's history. Most of those neighborhoods you mention (like South Park) have always had majority white populations and those people are mostly still there. The new people are the difference but that is a national trend. The low-income renters come and go as the times change and low-end properties are rehabbed. San Diego is, and and has always been a majority white/latino city.

Sherman Heights has seen some rehabbing but is far from what I consider "gentrified". There is a difference between revitalization (repair and restoration) and gentrification (the influx of the rich). Little Italy, Downtown SD is a better example of gentrification as there was never a wealthy population there. Remember those neighborhoods around balboa park were in many cases built for the wealthy elite and remain that way. The decline of the middle class in San Diego corresponds with the decline of the middle class nationwide in the past 20 years. My guess is that since you don't live in those areas you have only seen the upscaling of the commercial districts, which I agree... is a little goofy. How many puppy boutiques does a city need.

I second that Downtown SD has become pretty soft in recent years, and only getting softer like it's starting to suburbanize. Once the Albertson's opened up off Market st., that was a direct sign for families to move on in. I mean what downtown city has an Albertson's? Come on! We need more independent markets not big chain garbage. This goes for all the big chainers, like Starbucks.

Maybe the south would better fit your needs. Dallas, Houston, or Atlanta all three of the cities have a large black population and substantial black middle class. I cant believe California black population now almost none existent.
