African Americans, San Diego
Hello all on City-Data Forum.
So I'm lookin to find an African-American neighborhood to settle into.
Right now I'm renting in La Jolla. But I want to buy a home in a mainly AA neighborhood.
I'm just in from NY. Maybe I'll buy here or maybe in LA.

research
Well I researched the older threads.
Looks like I can find African-American life in the southern SanDiego area.
Or Eithiopian/Somalian cuisines ?
Are there any good clubs and/or resataurants there anyone would refer ?

I do know there are some nice European American neighborhoods used to live in that part of the nation.

City Heights is your best bet if you want Eastern African cuisine! There are also a large eastern African immigrant community in that area.

California isn't like the South. There are very few middle class African American neighborhoods someone with a choice would consider. There are none in San Diego. There are neighborhoods with sizable African-American populations. But they tend to have problems with low performing schools and crime.

Blacks make up about 3% of San Diego's population and the few black neighborhoods in the city tend to be ghettos. If you can afford La Jolla then you can do much better then the worst neighborhoods in town. My $0.02.

No. Nothing even close. If you want to live in a predominantly african-american area in San Diego it will be subject to graffitti, gangs, ghetto behavior, and violence.
There are parts of the city that are more ethically / socially diverse than La Jolla, but in general, African-Americans in San Diego fall into the low-income socioeconomic classes. There is no cohesive black middle class in San Diego.

Yeah, everyone is right. The closest to La Jolla is probably Hillcrest just because of it's diversity. It's like a gayer, more colorful version of La Jolla. North Park for the more middle class blacks. But either way, the well-off African-Americans pretty much live where everyone else that is well-off live.
