Came out with the intention of going to graduate school, may not may not actually attend. Honestly I've always loved the city, the scenery and the weather, and I really had no reason NOT to move. So here I am.

A recession!

After I graduated from university, I accepted a job with a government contractor in OC. They called me back and acknowledged that they'd made me an offer and I'd accepted, and they'd willingly let me start. But they'd lay me off after four days. (Part of the offer was to put me through USC for a masters' degree.)

They offered me a place in their San Diego location instead. OK, but what about the masters' degree? That was still on offer. There were three of us in the same situation. We had our weekly lessons via videotape (this was mid '80s), had phone contact with the profs as we needed, and carpooled up to LA for exams and etc. We even had a dedicated "agent" up at USC whose job it was to make our situation easier.

Interestingly enough, the San Diego location laid me off while I was taking the last two classes of the masters' degree. I negotiated, and they agreed to continue to fund the rest of the masters' degree. :-D

Since I later found work elsewhere in San Diego, I have been here ever since.

Fast forward to the current recession. My current employer is doing lay-offs. I'm now old enough that if I'm laid off, I'm de-facto "retired". We'll probably stay here, though, since we have a condo which is close to being paid off. We plan to travel within the US using our camper van to begin with. Then I wouldn't mind going to work at a Trader Joe's or something like that until I reach canonical retirment age. (My main concern is health benefits, so Wal-Mart is a no-go.)

Our "retirement job" is probably going to be as campground hosts at ... wherevver! :-D

i'm not there yet..but i'm coming soon
reasons:
#1-healthier lifestyles...lots of things to do outdoors/fresh produce/veg food
#2-weather! (allowing you to do all those things outdoors)
#3-not a tiny town in oklahoma...lots of people, stores, restaurants...i grew up in a town of less than 10,000 people
#4-location--its near a lot of other neat cities..by near i mean its closer than oklahoma is to any neat cities

I moved here in my late twenties when my husband was transferred here. We came from the Phoenix area and I far preferred San Diego. Lived here until my late forties when I moved elsewhere in CA for work. I am back now because of family, the climate, the scenery, the beach, Balboa Park and so on. Love this area for so many reasons. Happy as a clam to be back.
