I swear, I almost emailed the mod and asked him to delete it. I thought the same thing. I better not show my face around Petco, huh?

No, don't worry. No real Padres fan would ever blame a bad season on a message board thread! We all know too well about the suffering, but that's what makes it so awesome when they put it all together and win. I've been a Padres fan my whole life -- we were both born in 1969, afterall.

I am a huge fan. I hope it continues. I'd love to see us win our division with our little $40mm payroll!!!

Take that, A-Rod!!!! Doesn't he make like 5 times as much as our whole team combined????
I'm a huge fan also, it's great to see others out there. Did I personally expect the good start they have had? No, but it's still early and I'm still very skeptical about this team. I just don't think they have enough talent to do much, but I would love to be wrong and see them surprise everyone.

I think there are some things that are contributing to their early success. First I think David Eckstein was a huge addition, and is a very fun player to watch because he gives it his all no matter what he's doing. The bullpen has been better than expected, and that of course has contributed to the start they have had. I also think though that Sandy Alderson being gone from the front office has helped. I'm not Anti-Sandy and I do think he did some great things for the Padres for the 3 1/2 years he was here, but I also think his philosophies were making many in the organization press a bit, and I'm not just talking about the players. I don't think Kevin Towers had the green light to do what he wanted to do, and I think often Bud Black was probably given lineups to use instead of going with the lineup he truly wanted.

There is still a moneyball/computer operated presence in that front office with Paul Depodesta there, but I don't think it's anywhere as large as it was with Sandy here. I'm sad to see John Moores go because I do feel he and Ray Kroc are the two best owners this franchise has ever had, but I think Moorad and his group are going to do good things for the Padres. Regardless of what happens this year, I think things will finally change for the better after this. And hey I can't complain to much, I've been following this team a long time and I have never seen them win back to back division titles like they did in 05 & 06, and they came just one game shy of the playoffs in 07. They didn't have much playoff success, but I've gone through some very lean years and will take whatever success I can get from this team, but I do hope to see them win a World Series while I'm still alive.

+1 to most of what you said, J.

I love Eckstein. That boy can work the count. The others need to follow that lead! This swinging at the first pitch every AB is discouraging sometimes! LOL!

Also am in agreement re: the bullpen. I am cautiously optimistic there.

Moneyball is being made into a movie with Brad Pitt playing Billy Beane. Funny stuff.

JK, as an Angels fan, I just want to offer my condolences on the loss of that young man last week. How horrible, and such a senseless tragedy. I'm sure that has greatly affected the Angels family. So, FWIW, so sorry for that loss.

The Padres have nothing but upside this year, so I'm excited. Most people think they're going to suck. I think they're going to surprise a lot of people. If we even finish middle of the pack, with our payroll, it will be a victory. But don't be so quick to write them off just yet.

And I guess I'm not a jinx, since they came back from that horrible first inning last night to win again at the new Shea!!!

There is some major mojo going for our team right now. Down 5-0 to Philly in the first, then 7-1, and they win 8-7. Amazing. Maybe this thread will be the anti jinx!!

I will CRACK up laughing if they somehow manage to make a race of it for the division. Everyone counted us out before the season even started.
